Hey Guys!
I got an asus a7v motherboard and there is a good chance that it is fried. but before i buy a new motherboard i want to make i can't repair it. when i turn it on i'll get these beep codes: low-pitched beep followed by a high-pitched beep and that loops. i can't find any beep codes that match what i'm having. any help from you guys would be greatly appericated. Thank you!

ps. i've also contacted asus tech support, and i haven't got a response yet.

Beep codes are nearly always video or memory, because if they work it can print an error on the screen.

It doesn't sound like one of the beep codes mentioned in the manual -- pg 45

Some common beep codes though are not documented there, unfortunately

high - low - high - low - ... endless, changing about once per second (like a european police siren)

This seems to be CPU related.

Double check jumpers and switches. Try Jumper mode. Reseat CPU and RAM. Clear CMOS Ram. If it doesn't go away, try replacing CPU, RAM, Motherboard one after one.

long-short-short means it's Graphics Card related. Check seating of this card, try another one.

Other beeping can be CPU fan related.
If your mainboard beeps once and then shuts down:
Some BIOSes (depending on Version and setting) check whether a CPU fan is attached. If the fan is not attached to the mainboard header labeled "CPU FAN" or the rotational signal is not OK, it will not boot but only beep once and shut down. Check these two things, many people use the other fan header and wonder why it dosn't work.

i've tested the cpu in my other socket-a motherboard (the one i'm on right now; ecs k7s5a), and with the video card, and the ram. is there anything i can do or is the board fried?

1) clear the cmos

2) try in both jumperfree and jumper mode

3) in jumper mode, make sure you've got the jumpers set correctly. Check jumper settings on ASUS website. The geniuses at ASUS got the jumper settings backwards in early editions of the manual.

1) No. Well, you can try. But if it doesn't stop the beeping you'll need to clear the CMOS. This can be done with software or hardware.

Software method:

In the AFLASH archive at ASUS ftp site ftpboth CLRCMOS and CMOS are included. Instructions on how to use aflash.exe are in the A7V manual. CLRCMOS clears the CMOS (saved BIOS setup data like what drives you have, what RAM timing parameters you are using) and basically has the same effet as shorting the CMOS Reset jumper (or solder points) on your mainboard.

While your at it you might want to flash your BIOS to 1008 (the latest stable A7V BIOS)

hardware method:

Locate two solder points called CLRTC on your mainboard. They are besides the battery. Turn off the PC and disconnect the power supply. To be sure, take the mainboard battery out. Short the solder points for a few seconds with a metal object like a screwdriver. Remove the screwdriver. Reinsert the Battery. Reconnect power, power. Now the BIOS should say something like "CMOS checksum bad, defaults loaded". If it doesn't say this, the clearing was not successful -- so try again. If successful, go to BIOS Setup and load Setup Defaults. After that, set the options as needed.

2) Try jumpermode then. Instructions on how to switch, and jumper settings, are in the manual.

Man, you tried all of our suggestions and no-luck (after quite a few bumps too) here at Anandtech.

I hope it's cool to post a link to another forum but the

ASUS forum at AMDMB

is solely devoted to troubleshooting problems with ASUS AMD motherboards.

Good luck with this.

By the way, in my experience ASUS tech support will EVENTUALLY get back to you. But it's likely to be barely coherent.
