Okay, I am a very active person (weight train 3 times a week, run 7 times), and my sleep is very important to me. I get 8 hours or more every night. My mattress is crap now (It might be older than me). So I finally realized that my trouble sleeping at times and waking up really sore is partly due to my mattress and the sunken area in the middle.

I have a bad back also so I need something supportive.

The idea bed to get for me would be one of the models of the Tempurpedic line...but I currently don't have the money for it. So now I have no idea what to buy. I like the feeling of firm more than soft, but supposedly firm is the old way of thinking and soft is better for backs. I am a heavy set guy. 6'3 275lbs. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am looking to spend anywhere between 600-800$. I know it is not a lot but I am not planning to keep it long.

I was also just planning to buy it at Sleepy's, but I keep hearing commericals for 1-800 Mattress etc...any hot deals? Any online place I should buy?

Looking for a few guidelines and then I'll take those suggestions and try em out at the store.

Do you have a Costco membership? I really like the Sealy Posturpedic I got there (I believe it's ~$530 for a queen size now - you didn't mention size. You just missed the big coupon on those).

Ikea Sultan bed?

They're alright for the money.

Or Costco or Sams Club has some decent ones for the money.

1) All mattresses are fully supportive - both soft ones and hard ones. Why? If a soft one didn't fully support your body, you'd fall through the mattress and hit the floor. This is the biggest mattress myth out there. Both types completely and fully support your body weight. The difference is that soft ones fairly evenly spread out the force up on your body while hard ones concentrate that force on a few pressure points. Choose whichever you perfer. But don't think that you won't be supported with soft ones and don't think that soft ones are bad for backs.

2) Most people need ~1 month to adjust to a new mattress. Don't be fooled into thinking a mattress is bad just because you are uncomfortable at first.

3) I personally perfer the firmest mattress possible topped with ~4 inches of the softest cushioning possible. This gives me the best of both worlds.

4) There often is a big difference between a $200 mattress and a $500 one. But there is little difference between a $800 one and a $3000 one. Be prepared to spend enough to get the features and comfort you want. But don't blow too much money on it either.

5) Just go to the store and see what feels nice. Spend most of your time there lying down in the position that you normally sleep in (don't test it on your stomach if you are a back sleeper, or vise versa). Remember, once you put a mattress topper and a sheet on it, most mattresses will feel firmer at your house.

I recently got a Simmons Exceptionale (sp?) in queen, and it is hands down the best one I have ever seen. I actually get a full nights sleep now.

Got a Queen Sealy Plush set last year for $299 when a new mattress store opened. I think the set is like $500ish now. Its a pretty good mattress, and well worth the price.
