Hello,

I'm a longer time reader, rare poster. Simply because my input isn't as knowledgeable unless were off topic.

I am having trouble choosing a pinter?
Speed isn't an issue.
But text and photo quality and reliability is the majority concern.
I am buying them at my local store, so the pricing is different but i link them to newegg.com to save time.

1. Canon Pixma IP4000R

2. Canon IP4200

Both reliable but the 4200 has the micro-lock carts which would give me pause on that model until it is defeated.

The 4000R has wireless networking built in at an excessive premium. Don't they have a regular iP4000? I'd recommend either the iP4000 or iP5000 for the lower TCO. Sneak across the border and grab one at the nearest Staples to you.

thanks 13gigs. and Zepper
A: they do have an ip4000, but the price difference is only $10 because the ip4000R is on sale.

Networking is great on a printer when it's built in though, otherwise you need to spend lots of dough to get a print server or leave a computer running.

I can speak on behalf of the Epson R200. It is a great printer that I have been very happy with. The big benefits it has are CD/DVD printing (looks almost as good as professional) and the 6 seperate ink carts (black + 5 colors) give great color for pictures. Don't know if the others have those features, but I like my Epson.

The Canon Pixma's have CD/DVD printing as well, they just disable it in the USA models for some weird reason. If you click the link in my sig you will see how to re-enable it.

The IP4000 has 3 colors plus black for photos and one black for text. So 5 colors all toghether.

The Canon Pixma IP6000D has 6 colors much like the R200.

Well you definitely want to go Canon if reliability/cost is important.

Luckily they also happen to among the very best at photo quality too.

I'd say grab the IP4000 or else the IP5000 even better for some great results.

Both will be incredibly economical - reviews are such. The fact that they don't use 6 colours and therefore some diluated inks means ink usage can be lower than even Printers in their own line like the 6000.

As for the R200 or any Epson it's a wash - they use ink gratutiously, clog often and often leave alot of ink in the cartidge when saying empty.

Btw the ip5000 uses 1pl drops so might even be more economical when using that setting - however, it'll benefit from finer detail irregardless equally the output of the 6 inks.

Two mistakes reviewers often make is:
- not selecting 1pl ink quality successfuly (have to select Canon Pro paper)
- not upping the intensity 10% or even better using Vivid (corrects the default driver setting which uses a weaker colour profile)

Either way grab the ip4000/5000 now as the newer printers use smaller catrtidges, there are no compatibles available and may not be available as cheapily given the additional cost of a chip. Meanwhile, if re-filling Canon will now be able to tell if you've refilled + therefore not honour their warranty should they choose to.

Canon ip4000/5000 + High quality 3rd party ink + Satin Paper: Kirkland paper/Ilford Classic Pearl -else- High Glossy: Red River 68lb Ultra Gloss which seems to be rather similiar to Canon Pro + UV/Gas fading spray = Very high quality prints on the cheap that have some lasting power.

I searched around today in the UK and must have got one of the last remaining IP5000 printers - only found two reputable places selling for a decentish price that each had 20 or so left (less now)
