i would say it's heat, check your cpu temps in the bios, also your mainboard cd has a hardware monitor prog you can install and look at the temps, check tham at idle then after you play for a bit, log the results and report back

using mobo monitor 5:
before games..
sensor 1: 19C, sensor 2: 44C, sensor 3: 27C I'm guessing 44C is my cpu temp

after about 20 minutes of cs..

the heat issue is a concern. you might also want to check the allocation of memory. I had similiar lock-ups and had to shutdown several programs that were initiated during start-up. This freed up more memory and cured the issue. Unfortunately I can't remember the command that you use to get at the start up menu (come on, someone else has more functional memory cells then I do ) to shutdown those programs.

hope this helps.

Yea I'd really like to get rid of some startup programs... you can see what programs ae running by using Ctrl+Alt+Del under the tab Aktivities/Processor. But don't know how u change the startup.

What is the 1T command? What does that mean.. my system is having lockups and I am afraid that it could be the memory.

Hmmm...just recently the same thing has started happening to me playing Day of Defeat (another Half Life mod). I checked my temp w/ MBM and the Sensor 1 is at 49 degrees C - kind of high? I wonder if it has anything to do w/ the recent HL/CS updates???

I have had the same problem for quite a while, and after building pretty much a new system by putting in a new motherboard, CPU, PSU and new RAM, I'm using the same video card. I tested my RAM to see if it was responsible, but apparently the video card is bad. I too have a GeForce3, so if I were you, I would look into replacing the video card.

to run the program that helps you take off programs from start up, go to run and type in msconfig. Go to the startup tab and take off what you don't want

Well in my case I never had the aggresiv memory option on, tried bumbing upp the vcore a bit. Maybe it will make a difference.

That will just cause more heat. I was able to down-volt my T-Bird's without a problem so more voltage is pointless.

44c under load is not a bad temp at all (especially for a 1.4ghz T-Bird)so I would rule out heat here. The PSU is also fine. It seems like the classic nvidia 'infinite loop' problem and its common especially with the original GF3's. The mobo is AMD 760 based so there are a lot of otions to play with in the BIOS. Do what somebody else has suggested and start from the least aggressive memory and chipset settings. If you have a the option of putting a wait state in the "super bypass" option like my Abit KG7 does, then try it. Once you get it stable, then gradually enable each option to its faster setting until you ht the 'snag'. Disable fastwrites under the AGP setting. Also, do you have the latest AMD AGP driver for Win2000/XP?

check your ram settings, i've seen this happen before.

if your ram is rated at CAS 2 and you are running at cas 2, change it to cas 3.

if heat isn't your problem, chances are it is your ram, see if you can swap it out with someone elses.

i suppose it could also be your hard drive, run some quality scan disks and tests on the drives.
