So I get home from work yesterday?do some stuff around the house and all of a sudden I find that my case fans, including the CPU Fan and Video Card, are all NOT running for some reason?..the power supply fan is the only one running. The computer is running, meaning everything on screen is fine, but I pretty much shut it down right away. Turn the switch off, turn it back on, hit the power button?.same thing, no fans are spinning except for the power supply fan. Not really sure what is going on I think maybe it?s a short with the wires (I don?t have my cables very nicely laid out, but I?ve never had a problem with it until now). I open the case, check connections and what not (I have the case laid on my desk at this point) hit the switch and hit the power button and everything starts up fine??so I think.

I go and lift the case to stand it back up?.2 seconds after doing so all the fans go out again. Lay it back down, fiddle with wires again?.turn it off and on, fans come back up?jeez. Anyway, now I stand it back up and the fans stay on?.i thinking it?s fixed now hopefully. Also the whole time I?ve been turning the comp off and on the farthest it?s booted up to is the log in screen?..i just never choose my name because I was too concerned with the case fans.

Well now I choose my name, it starts loading up?..takes a little longer to change to my desktop, finally gets to my desktop (meaning just my background for my desktop) and freezes. No icons, no start button, no taskbar?..just my desktop background picture?..ugh. I try rebooting several times with no success. I lay the case down again, fiddle inside again?.turn it on, log into my name and everything loads up fine like there?s nothing wrong. At this point it?s late, I decide to leave it on it?s side since it?s working and go to bed. Wake up this morning, it?s still working fine, decide to stand it back up?.bad choice. After rebooting it goes back to just loading to my desktop screen and nothing else. Lay it down?nothing.

So now I boot it up in safe mode?.everything comes up fine like it should?no problems?which confuses me more now. I also try a system restore from safe mode but that does nothing. At this point I need to get to work and that?s where I?m at now. I?m really not sure what to try to do next when I get home because I really have no clue what the problem could be?.meaning is it an Electrical Short? Hardware problem? Virus?

I?d appreciate any suggestions?or if you have any questions for me please let me know I?ll be checking this post all day for answers. Thanks.

Well, I hate to say this but I think you need to completely dis-assemble that baby and put it back together. Sounds like you have a short somewhere and that in the process the premature shutdowns have hosed your O/S.

If it were me I would dis-assemble everything except for taking the processor off of the motherboard. Make sure that you don't have a screw or foreign object inside of the case under that M/B. Be very careful about following any instructions give by both the motherboard manufacturer and also the case manufacturer regarding the correct procedure for mounting the motherboard to the case.

Also make sure you take the power supply out of the case and remount it.

MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE PROTECTED FROM STATIC DISCHARGE WHILE DOING ALL OF THIS.

Might want to consider re-assembling with the minimum number of components and then boot it to a floppy or CD to make sure it is functioning correctly before putting everything back in.

ALSO BEFORE DOING ANY OF THE ABOVE, YOU MAY WANT TO GO INTO THE BIOS AND WRITE DOWN ON PAPER ALL OF THE BIOS PARAMETER SETTINGS AND THEN GO BACK INTO BIOS FIRST THING WHEN YOU BRING IT BACK UP TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS STILL THE SAME OR IS SET PROPERLY FOR THE HARDWARE CONFIGURATION YOU HAVE.

Good luck.

ugh....i hate to say but you might be right.

you don't think it's a hardware failure though do you because it still boots up fine in Safe Mode? or am i wrong in thinking that?

Premature shutdowns may have just damage areas that are used during normal boot mode.
