So the title says most of it. I am a student at university right now and trying to decide between these two devices. I want something extremely lightweight and easy to carry around all day. I don't do anything graphic intense (I have a desktop at home). Just the basic school stuff like internet, typing papers, taking notes and some powerpoint presentations.

I have read several threads about people using iPads in classes and scanning their notes and textbooks in as PDF's to cut down on carrying all of that stuff around with them.

The Air seems nice to have a full keyboard and bigger screen as well as the other capabilities that a laptop offers.

I need help deciding AT as well as why you believe one device over the other would be better suited for what I have in mind. Feel free to ask any other questions for info you need to help you decide.

Thanks!

The iPad gets better battery life, but the minute you want to have 2 windows side by side for comparison purposes, or want to drag an image from wikipedia into a presentation, you are totally screwed.

Yes, the MBA is twice as much (if you are comparing base model to base model), but the Air is a much more capable system.

My friend also wanted to get an iPad. He wanted iOS, and he wanted a laptop, and figured it would be a good middle ground. I agreed that it was a great way to get into iOS, much better than an iPod Touch due to the larger screen, but not a middle ground for a laptop.

Thanks TheStu!

Having only owned windows machines in my life I was a little worried about buying a macbook but I really liked them when trying them in the store. Plus I have found nothing close to the portability of the macbook air.

Thanks for the input keep it coming!

I will say this much about Apple laptops, if you actually use the trackpad on them and not a mouse then you may just find yourself hating every other laptop, forever because their trackpads cannot come close.

Also, according to the Anandtech review, the screen on the Air is pretty good for the class that it is in.

I would not get an ipad as my only computer. Its a great media device (browsing the web, watching movies, playing games), but for every day use, I'd still want a laptop. There are just somethings you will want a computer for.

Well I still do have a desktop at home so it won't be my only computer.

To be honest I would get a macbook. The iPad is nice and all, but it sucks at anything remotely approaching 'serious' work. It can do light note-taking and stuff, but typing 5000-word essays or lab reports is frankly not something I would like to do with it.

I'd get a 13" MacBook Pro. Just bought one at Microcenter for $999 and I haven't looked back since.

New MacBook airs look cheaply made, and I've heard of overheating and graphics issues.

i just got the 13 inch macbook air over christmas to upgrade from a 2008 macbook pro and it rocks. i originally had planned to just get another 15 inch macbook pro and drop a ssd in it, but seeing as the entire macbook pro line is due for a revision, and the mbas just got revised, i just decided to pull the trigger on a decked out 13 inch macbook air. and damn. it was a pretty penny, but it is worth it. on paper, it doesn't sound like a fast machine, but it is snappy. it's the best apple laptop i've ever used overall (and this is my 4th one). it's surprisingly well made, super light, and i can play starcraft 2 on it in medium settings in OS X. i couldn't even do that with my penryn macbook pro when booted into windows 7. read anand's review on the machines to get his opinions and go into the store and play around with one to get an idea of what it's like.

i've had a 13 inch macbook pro and an older 15 inch macbook pro, and my biggest gripe about those were it's size and weight. the mba is lighter and it's thinness just makes it more portable. i didn't think it would make a difference, but i find myself taking around my laptop wherever i go with less and less hesitation - i just throw it into a sleeve and just walk around with it. people think that it's an ipad or something because it's so small/thin.

that being said, i just can't find a reason to use my ipad anymore.

It seems the overheating issues were for the last Air. Considering both problems are fixed now, I guess you can get an Air.

They still look cheap though. I love my MacBook Pro. I chose it over buying a laced out HP with i7 processor, beats audio and huge screen, and don't care less. After sticking a sandforce SSD in it, it's been perfect.

I just set my buddy up with the white 13" Macbook ($949 student pricing), 8GB RAM ($85), and a 120GB SSD ($240). For $1285, he has an incredibly fast laptop. I personally like the plastic Macbooks more than the metal Macbook Pros - they are more dent-proof, although they scratch easier.

Memory link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231294

SSD link: (no moving parts = great for laptops) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231378

OP, if you look into a 13" Macbook, I'd recommend going full-bore on a protection kit to keep the machine clean throughout your college experience. That means a cushioned bag, a plastic exterior shell, a keyboard protector, and wristpad mats. Here are some links:

Outside shells: http://www.speckproducts.com/macbooks/macbook-13-new-white-unibody.html

Keyboard Protector: http://www.iskin.com/protouch_macbook/common_features.html

Wrist Pads: http://www.marware.com/products/MacBook_2/Macbook-Protection-Pack-Deluxe

The exterior shells are pricey (like $50), but they protect your Macbook from dings, scuffs, scratches, and from being knocked around or accidentally bumped, so in my book it's worth it. I always put one on my laptops and when I go to sell them years later, they still look brand-new.

I usually hate keyboard protectors, but the ones from iSkin (starting at $25) are surprisingly nice to type on, and if your fingers are greasy from food or you spill a drink on your keyboard, it's not the end of the world. They're also easily removable and washable.

The wrist pads are nice because (1) they protect the wristpads from scratches, (2) they keep the wristpads clean (the white ones especially tend to get dirty from oil in your skin), and (3) they are made from soft microfiber, so they're nicer to rest your wrists on over long periods of time.

I would also highly recommend a padded bag. The two best options are a laptop backpack or a shoulder bag - just depends on what style you like. I have an Ogio Metro backpack, which is going on 4 years and still looks brand-new (I broke 3 backpacks before that!). It has a padded laptop section with a dedicated zipper so you can pop out your laptop easily, which is handy at the airport and also for when you have to pack up and put your laptop away quickly. Here's a link: (eBags.com has them for about $50 - mine was about $80 when I bought it, and was absolutely worth every penny)

http://www.ogio.com/product/view/319/Metro

You might also want to consider a spare power charger if you're at your desk a lot - that way you don't have to go through the hassle of plugging/unplugging the cable every time you leave or come home. Apple charges $80, but you can get them from OWC for $55:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apple/MC461LLA/

So total you're looking at around $1500 for a fast 13" Macbook with a full protection kit, bag, and spare power cable. With a dual-core processor, 8 gigs of RAM, and a speedy solid-state drive, the performance should last you a good few years, and the protection pack will keep it safe & shiny for the duration of ownership. Some food for thought

What are you going to school for? That would help us make recommendations.

As far as scanning goes, Amazon has a portable duplex (double-sided) scanner for $245:

http://www.amazon.com/Fujitsu-ScanSn...dp/B003990GMQ/

Or the more powerful (but larger) Epson GT-50 scanner for $370:

http://www.amazon.com/Epson-WorkForc...dp/B001OATBEQ/

Amazon also sells scalpels for slicing the book & binding, and I got my paper cutter for like $20 at Staples. They have a nicer model that has an alignment laser for a few bucks more, which is nice for getting the pages perfectly aligned when cutting books up for scanning.

I still carry a paper notebook with me to class because it's a pain to write math symbols and sketch diagrams on a computer quickly. It's just faster to doodle on paper and then scan it in later. The iPad is nice because it's an instant-on type of thing and can store documents, so for most classes all I need is an iPad and a paper notebook, and maybe a calculator for stuff like math class. You can get away with a small messenger bag instead of a large backpack that way.

That Dell definitely doesn't count, you should have linked to the Adamo, which can have more than 1GB RAM, and a Core Solo.

The Adamo, for $899 these days, comes with a 2.1GHz Core 2, 4GB RAM, and a 128GB SSD. Drawbacks include Windows 7, less battery life, crappier trackpad and possibly a worse screen (it is a 13" display with the same res as the 11" Air)

The new Samsungs aren't out yet, and when they do come out, I believe they are supposed to be almost $2K

As for MSI... I have an MSI graphics card, but it broke after 8 months, they replaced it quickly (actually I think the replacement arrives today, woohoo), but based on my evidence, MSI's stuff runs well, but breaks early on.

macbook air runs win7/xp/*nix/osx = win
macbook air does facetime = win
macbook air does app store = win

but windows 8 is going to support ARM = oops that should run on the iPAD!

I know it's non-Apple, but you might give serious consideration to a Kno. It's built for the application you're looking at... if your books are available.

I'm working on a master's program and we use some more obscure texts that weren't available, so it turned out not to be a good option for me.

i wouldn't do any serious typing on the ipad. it sounds like the air would be a better fit for you.

The answer I had prepared in my head already whilst waiting for the thread to open was "how much typing will you be doing?"

You will want to hammer nails into your eyes rather than trying to type anything more than a couple of sentences on an ipad - Go for the air

Yeah, about one sentence in and I'm ready for a keyboard lol. I don't even like the iPad for forums or Facebook etc. because of that

If you are going to buy one it better be the Air. I can tell you from actual experience. The iPad is nice, but its no laptop replacement. In fact all I do with the iPad is use it to show photos and as a remote for iTunes. The browser is decent as well, but the Air is a whole other level.

iPad is the perfect consumption device
It would be if:

1) It had Flash OR
2) Flash was no longer necessary.

My favourite newspaper in Canada (The Globe and Mail) still uses Flash for its embedded video. They do have an iPad app now, but I dislike using dedicated apps for regular websites.

That's the one thing that's holding me back, at least until iPad version 2 anyway. Many sites have now dumped a lot of its Flash in the last year, and version 2 should be a nice update hardware-wise.
