I'd get the 600m. It looks like it'd be better for gaming, if you ever feel the desire to game on the go, and maybe the new case will be sturdier than the 8200s'.

600m full way. The Video is better, I bet the Centrino 1.3 would give the P4-M 1.8 a pretty hard fight, it's got a CD-RW/DVD rather than the plain-DVD for the 8200. Although it is a tad more expensive, it could be cheaper by downgrading the CD-RW/DVD to a plain-DVD. The only way I see the 8200 toping the 600m is in the monitor size (15" vs 14")

New case is definitely sturdier. A lot lighter and nicer looking too. The fit-and finish on these is great.

600m lacks firewire, if that's an issue for you. (It is for me and my DV cam.)

I'd go with the 600m.

But how'd you get those fantastic prices?

And the Latitude D600 seems to be generally better reviewed than the Inspiron 600m, although ostensibly they appear to be the exact same computer.

its sooo nice that they finally got rid of those creaky plastic housings. the prevalence of desktop processors in a lot of the new notebooks is disturbing, though.

Question for Mani, since he seems to work there.

What's the difference, hardware wise, between the Inspiron 600m and the Latitude D600? They seem like the same computer other than a few minor cosmetic differences (i.e. different lid, touchpoint, etc). I've never really understood the distinction between the Inspiron and Latitude series. They seem to be the same computer where the Inspiron is "multimedia optimized" and the Latitude is "network optimized". I understand that the Latitude series is intended for the corporate market, but these 2 lines seem to feature the same computers with the same components.

I have noticed different options or ports on the laptops if you look a the pics here on anandtech the review they did you will notice no funny port next to the dvd-rw that is on the lattitude, no 1394 on the other side and also look at the back just about everything is arranged differently and so is the bottom so I belive the case is about the same but the guts are not.

also would you be able to buy the d800 keyboard and put it in a 600m so you can have the poiter?

i think the only on that has firewire is the d800. i'm waiting for some coupons and stuff to popup so i can order a 600m. the d600 costs way too much more for pretty much the same thing.

and the d600 can have up to i think 1gb or 2gb of ram while the 600m maxes out at 768mb.
