Hello

I am going to be getting a new computer in a couple of days and I decided to get a new monitor. Now I have been researching CRT monitors for days now, even searched this forum, and I still can't decide on which one to choose. Everyone seems to offer different ones, and the monitors I want are out of stock usually. I am willing to spend a little over $300 and I want 19" and up. I play video games but I do homework on my computer too, but mainly video games. I'm am more interested in the trinitron type of monitor if that helps any. I don't mind referbs either if its a good deal.

Thanks

For CRT monitors, my favorite brand is ViewSonic. Don't get the low end A series. The G and P series monitors usually rock.

Take the time to go out and look at the monitors that interest you. Specs won't tell you how straight and true the pictures is at the edges or anything about how good the contrast ratio and color depth is.

I've gotta say in the CRT dept, just get something referb'd w/ a Trinitron tube, In general 21" dual input Trintrion tube monitors of various brands w/ res up to 1600x1200 or higher can be had under $200 in many cases delivered. Do a search for referbed monitors, NEC /Mitsu also makes good CRT's w/ the diamondtron tubes.

Thanks for the replies. Well, I actually looked at the samsung 997df at bestbuy and I thought it was ok but I really didn't have much to compare it to in the store. Other than LCDs that is. I read that the ViewSonic G90FB 19" is a good monitor and it got good reviews on the newegg site. Its one that I'm considering. I've got a question though. If its a Sony Trinitron with Compaq or Ibm stamped on it does is there a difference? Its more or less the picture tube that matters and not the brand thats on the monitor...right?

The best CRTs are NEC\Mitsubishi hands down, still. However the SyncMaster 997DF is worthy.

I'm thinking of getting this http://www.accurateit.com/details.asp?iid=387# For some reason I feel I'm over doing it though. Where would I be able to find a good NEC\Mitusubishi monitor at? I can't seem to find any. I looked up the NEC FE991SB-BK and read some reviews. Some said that after a year they had issues with it, so I don't know. It's kind of what I'm looking for though.

I've seen that piticualur IBM monitor you listed for a bit less in the past but none the less thats a pretty good deal assuming shiping isn't outragous, pretty much anything under $300 delivered for a good 21" CRT works (at least in my book )

NEC/Mitsubishi!
I have an older Diamond Plus 91 and the NF tube is great. Color and picture integrity at the edges is still fantastic.

You can get any number of 21" IBM or 22" NEC monitors for $200 online. Search for P260 in Google.

I bought a used 22" NEC MultiSync CRT on Yahoo Auction. It was about $120 shipped and is absolutley amazing in what it can do. I use it all the time, and don't need to hook up my TV to watch movies anymore. There were oodles of NEC end Mitsubishi CRTs, but I live in Japan (Yahoo Auctions Japan).

This is a slight stray from the actual topic, but it is in-line with the G90fb mentioned above. In last 4 days I have purchased and setup this 19" monitor. Newegg purchase. Graphical images and games are fantastic as many have stated but I seem to be fixated on pixellation in any text (i.e. hyperlinks, word processor, email text, even text in tool bars and popup menus).

Seems like there is spacing inbetween pixels, the fonts do not appear "fluid" and sharp. Have been able to find a few (very few) posted discussions about this "blurry text" or issues with text on this monitor. Have set all the different monitor settings and many different resolution/refresh rates. But cannot get the letters crisp.

Even notice the pixellation in the grey slider bars and toolbars, and in the titlebars of windows xp.

CAN ANYONE AND EVERYONE GIVE ME SOME FEEDBACK --- don't know if I should send it back for replacement or alternate model. thanks

Get a refurb 21" Trinitron, usually under $200. Shipping is the killer though. If you can get pickup that'd be great.

Do any of you understand what I am talking about since you have used several different kinds of monitors? I pretty much have been using a Gateway "Vivitron" - trinitron 17" and never was fixated on the current issue.

With this Viewsonic G90f its as though I can see each row of pixels and these rows are cutting into the "black" or "white" of the the lettering in the text...so the lettering in the titlebars, hyperlinks, text in email and wordprocessor fields seem ever so slightly broken up by white/black pixels thus each letter or character does not appear "fluid". Its annoying as hell to look at all the text on cnn.com or any web page not to mention text in labels of toolbars and titlebars.

Sure seems more pronounced than the crappy Dell 19" monitor at work I stair at 8 hours.

Can any of you confirm that you know what I am describing --- is it just the bigger 19" or can you guys verify that your lower end $ 19" monitors are showing "fluid" and not "grainy" fonts.

Any suggestions would be appreciated ----- please give me suggestions on current CRT and possibly steps to return....not just "buy an xyz monitor". thanks
