It's NOT fake.....just servers Newegg uses. Always have used them, probably always will.

And here's another thing....when viewing my authorized certs in Firefox, akamai.net is NOT under Authorities (where your SSL-type certs are), like VeriSign (RSA) or COMODO or Equifax or Thawte or any other cert.

It's under Servers, like DirecTV's or Wachovia's or Secure Business Services (NCIXUS's), to name a few in mine......which makes sense because that's what it is....it's being utilized by Newegg as a server.

And according to Firefox, I've had a248.e.akamia.net on my server list for over two years in its current listing......well before your "fake" alert was yelled!

THANK YOU! That's what I was trying to say, you just put it a lot better.

Exactly Newegg doesn't use them Therfore the site I was at was not legit!!!

Just becuase a site has an SSL certifcate doesn't mean it's a valid one for the site you are at

Did you miss that paragraph two posts up? #1 They do use Akamai, #2 Half the fucking internet's got one thing or another hosted at Akamai, #3 They did NOT issue the certificate, because they don't. They're hosting shit for Newegg, and Apple, and Yahoo, and so on.

Thanks for the scare, Fox News...

I still stand by my assertion that the site is real, even with your other thread.

Dude, akamai.net is NOT their security SSL certificate....that's through VeriSign. Akamai.net provides secure servers.....and they do use akamai.net, as has been shown to you by Odin, among others. But believe what you want......you'll always see akamai.net when you enter your account if you pay attention to your browser's bottom bar as it loads.

Try it and see for yourself...........

LOL at all those saying OP didn't legitimately run into a possible DNS poison. If he did his symptoms would be exactly as described - the browser would give a warning about the cert being invalid.

The Newegg CS reps, like most companies CS reps, know less about what partnerships they have than we do. Unless its involving something directly in your account, don't expect a correct answer.

Look I am just telling people what happened to me!!! Newegg verified the certificate I typed above was not valid.

They also told me that they don't use Akamai.

If you don't believe me fine I was just posting this here to help other out.

Call Newegg if you want to confirm what I am telling you, or go ahead and use Akamai.net when shopping at Newegg.

What would interest me is if you can find a certificate from Newegg not using verisign but Akamai and whether it looked like the one I typed up there or had www.newegg.com somewhere in the cert. Which the one I type up there doesn't have.

Like I said I am sorry if I am wrong but this is what the newegg rep told me and thats what I am going with.

Try asking a minimum wage employee at ANY establishment (restaurant, convenience store, etc.) anything more complicated than "can I get fries with that?" and see how dedicated or accurate your response is. What do you mean "they don't use Akamai"? Akamai is like the world's biggest superfast server farm of shit to store for everyone. Chill out, silly 'uman.

OP has every right to be concerned. He was shopping at a secure site and got a certificate warning. Was he the victimeof a man in the middle? Don't know. Did somebody mess up the cert on the akamai URL in question? Don't know.

I checked that host/URL and the encryption and fingerprint look good, but in OPs second post if the dates are correct the cert is BAD. The fact remains, while he was shopping some of the content on that page the cert could not be verified or trusted.

Dude Get off your high horse I didn't come here to tell you the sky way falling I just told you what happened to me, Also I said in advance that I was sorry if I was wrong i no way did I pretend like I was an expert. Instead of looking in to what I say you would rather have an E-penis war and try to sling about insults.

Whether Newegg uses akimai or not perhaps the rep was mistaken, but i personally will take what she told me over a bunch of links found in Google.

The certificate i typed above was not for newegg nothing i did while i was in it register with the verisign certificate I have right now. i.e. no headphones on auto notify nothing updated or saved in my wish list. Nothing in my cart when I logged back on.

The rep told me that was not a valid certificate, because it didn't say anywhere on it www.newegg.com. She told me the IT department said that www.newegg.com would be on there if it was valid.

The rep also told me to only trust the verisign one so that what I have told you.

Thanks dude wether I am right or wrong I don't care anymore, let the peanut gallery here think what they want.

Just trying to help other out, Newegg told me the certficate I was given was not valid and firefox wouldn't give me that warning if it was.

I have been surfing newegg for day looking at different pieces of merchandise and that was the first time I got that warning.

Did you encounter a fake website? I can't say. But what I can say is that you're quite ignorant if you think NewEgg doesn't use Akamai, even after the proof was shown to you. The fact that you say they're just "a bunch of links found in Google" lead me to believe so. The link I gave you is directly from Akamai's website.

Ok listen, you're wrong and need to stop talking about something you are wrong about. It's very annoying and stupid. I don't care if you called a Newegg rep because half the time(by half I am all) "reps" have an IQ of 85. That is why they get that job.

/thread, wrong and wrong more. I HAVE USED NEWEGG FOR YEARS AND BEFORE THIS "EXPLOIT" BS WAS AROUND I HAD AKAMAI ALL THE TIME SHOW UP ON THEIR WEBSITE.

Just to add to the argument, Firefox did warn me about DNS certification and redirection to a site that didn't use the same certification or something at 1800contacts.
