Need help installing a new harddrive on an old system

Ok I instaled the harddrive... Its a western digital 20gig harddrive. I went into BIOs and set it to primary and I set it to 20 gig and LBA... so I install windows and let it start and I have a whopping 2 gigs worth of harddrive.
My friend has an old K6 mobo and processor, windows 98.
He used to have a 6 gig harddrive that would give him the correct amount of the harddrive.
The BIOS gives me some options that I am only vaguely familiar with, Large, LBA and Normal for the harddrive. I am not intirely familiar with these.. I just hit auto and it came out to two. I also tried setting it to other choices, such as Large and such but it gets stuck at Verifying DMI settings... and doesnt boot. Can anybody help me with this? I am t a loss.

sounds like a bios limitation.
what OS are you using?

windows 98. any info would be great on how to fix it.. I kind of recommended that he buy this harddrive and now he is upset because he cant use it =) *sneaks out the back door while best friend isnt looking*

Download & install the latest BIOS update for the mobo. You may have to get a new mobo to access the entire drive.

As Bacillus stated it sounds like a Bios limitation, perhaps you could get an update for the bios so it can correctly tell the size of the HD if not there is always the overlay that normally comes with new HD or upgrade mobo, you should be able to find a socket7 mobo around.

also, when you fdisked, did you choose large disk support?

Same thing happened to me when I was building a system recently. Check to make sure the jumpers are set on the hard drive correctly. That's what my problem was anyway
