I am not sure what to do next, so I am hopeing this is a post that is allowed here. Looking for any info on where to get help, who to contact, or anyone who knows this guy/gal.

This guy has purchased at least $7500 worth of items with fake checks, one of the items was a new Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop from me for over $1800.
Cops havn't done anything as they are "back logged", the fed's won't touch it cause its less then $10,000 worth of stuff.

Here's the situation
August 5th I was contacted by Freddie Thompson via email from email address freddie_joanne@yahoo.com
We agreed on a price of $1844 shipped COD to him in CA to the North Hollywood address.
I shipped out the laptop to him on August 6th and he signed for it on August 7th, giving the FedEx driver a Fake Cashiers check.
Here's the tracking number if you would like to see 826979952480 (fedex)

The check was made from some stock of checks, all with the same number.

The number on at least two of the checks is 9356472435 9998 0000143 0 from a First Federal Bank or First Federal Bank of California.

The laptop is as follows
Dell Inspirion 8200 - This has been reported as stolen.
Service number 5381Q11, Express service code 11078827525
Windows XP Home - Product Key XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-72WTD (only listing last 5 here, have complete numbers though)

256 megs of Ram

His information I have gathered so far. (with the help of others he ripped off)

LAPD had me do a online report, which will get processed and go to the department it needs to. (course no freakin telling when that will be)

Fedex flat out told me to piss off. They will not do anything for me.

Dude...
Call the FBI.

What he did is a federal offense.

Did that. They don't handle these small items (there words not mine since its less then $10,000)

They sent me to a website to file a complaint.

Since you got his address and phone number, why don't you call his local police office and tell them to go knock on his door????

The LAPD won't do that without going through the proper steps first. The first step was me fileing an online complaint. The next step is me waiting till they get around to it.

They won't go to the address. And we (me and my roomate) provided all the information to them, copies of emails, check's, sig from fedex confirming he got it, everything.

My guess is since there isn't any money in it for them (no fines) and I don't pay CA taxes that they don't give a crap.

One of the guys who got ripped off for the wheels sent someone to the hollywood address, where a little old lady lives. The phone number seems valid, but nobody ever answers it.

Online lookups, even the pay services haven't resulted in anything yet.

This guy is even paypal verified, which means he verified a bank account with them, but they don't give out that information to any third party.

Going to have to go see a lawyer next and see if there's more that i can do. Course i don't have any money so it will have to be one of those we don't get paid less you get paid things. (if they exsist)

Jim

Paypal not giving you any info is not a surprise, which only means you have to get someone with authority to look into the case and get the right information to get the guy. I think it's best you PM the troll hunters and ask what steps they usually take to prosecute someone. People got ripped before for way less and the authorities were able to get involved so in your case I'm sure someone will be able to help you. It might just take a lot of calling around to get the right guy who is willing to help you though.

Goodluck. This guy got real balls. And here I thought COD was safe. And why do they even take cashier's check? I thought COD = Cash on Delivery???

That's one scary story. I feel like closing my Paypal account now. Did you actually have $10,000 in your paypal funds or did he draw them from your checking account? I don't think it's wise to have such a large amount of money in paypal funds but even if you don't, I don't think it's wise to link your main checking account to Paypal either. You need to open up a secondary checking account and not put so much money in there! Goodluck on the case.

The best thing you can do is as much of the detective work as you can yourself before passing it off to the authorities. Get the names, contact info, and details of the theft, from every person who has been scammed by this person, document everything professionally. If you can get the TOTAL amount that this guy has ripped-off from all persons higher than $10,000, it will make the feds pay more attention. They are far more interested in 'fraud rings' or someone who is defauding dozens or hundreds of people than they are some little fish.

I'm not sure why you would expect FedEx to have any power here, they are a professional CARRIER (i.e. a business), not a law enforcement agency. Now had you done your business through the USPS, they have federal law enforcement powers. FedEx has no more power than Al's Coney Island and they fulfilled their obligations to you, none of which was to verify the authenticity of cashier's checks.

In defense of the authorities, you are only like scam victim # 4,746,932 this year alone. Internet-based scam and fraud has caused complaints to sky-rocket and the authorities simply cannot keep up. In case you didn't notice, there are like...murderers, rapists, and arsonists out there committing crimes, too.
