Need help on a new CPU (Socket 939)

Hi

Yeah I am going to be upgrading my CPU and Video Card this christmass.
Basically this xmass is the only chance to get new hardware until late nextyear/early2009 (if you want details or want to know why, you can PM me)

My current setup is kind of good, but due to a power surge last night my CPU died. I am currently using an old AMD 63 3200 and well, gaming is not the same that with my 3700.

I'm going to be getting a new PSU, a X1950XT and a new CPU, but I can't decide which one.

Socket 939 though that one is kind of weird cause the one I have has 1 PCI-E x1 and 1 PCI-E x4, not 2 PCI-EX1. But yeah its not the Platinum Ed.

I'm trying to find one new CPU (dual core,FX,w/e) under 250, preferably under 200.

They'd actually end up more powerful if overclocked since Opties overclock like mad. Cheap and powerful = Opties.
The X2s would be good, if they were ALOT cheaper.
The FX-55 is junk since it's only single core.

I see but I really don't want to overclock.. had a horrible experience in the past, though I could get this 3200 at 2.5 relatively easy.

I have 1GB (2X512) OCZ Gold Edition Ram at 2.5-3-3-7 and the mobo listed above

If not overclocking the 4600+ is your best bet

Allright I think I won't be able to grab a 4600+ for they are selling like candy on newegg... sold out 5 mins it went in stock.

I was looking at the opterons... besides overclocking, they seem to have the same architecture than the X2's. Also I think the hotfixes and optimizers for dual cores should work on those too.

I was looking at the 170. for 182 US$ is that good and worth the money? I may overclock with the stock fan and thermal paste.

Yes 170 is good....You definitely want the larger L2 cache...The 4600+ only has 512kb of l2 cache..gaming is one of the few areas where cache seems to help a bit...

Sounds good. Basically I may OC it a bit to compensate for the mHZ ... with the stock cooling fan and thermal paste, my OCZ Gold Edition RAM 1GB and a K8N Neo4 Mobo. How far will it go and be 100% stable? I may get it up to 2.4 max.

I got mine up to 3.0GHz, DFI SLI-DR, and 1GB OCZ Gold. 4 days Prime95 and Seti at home ever since. 100% stable and 100% CPU usage! On air, stock heat sink, fan, and even thermal paste. Just popped it in, fired it up, and started the OC. You should be able to get a good, stable OC with very little effort or expense.
