Hey,
I recently upgraded my system with kingston pc2700 ddr sodimm...for notebook.
I had 2x128 ram's earlier...so i removed one and placed the new 512 ram.
But after many number of restarts...it is detecting only 588784k which is (512+64).

Can any one tell me why this has happened...and how to correct it...

Hi swapna and Welcome to the forums!

Any chance you've integrated graphics with 64MB of dedicated ram?

@ fern thanks for welcoming.

Not knowing the spec's of your system, I'm guessing here.

But to explain more fully: most lappies have an integrated gfx chip built-on to the motherboard. This chip will use some system memory/ram for video purpose exclusively. I.e., this ram will be dedicated to use for gfx and therefore will not show up (looks like it's missing).

If you have a new fancy lappie with a (vga) daughter-board it will have it's own video ram and will not use system ram.

But, most likely the ram appears to be missing because it's in use by the gfx system of your lappie and not available for general use. THis is case in about 99% of these type-posts.

Tell what your lappie is and we can find out or someone already will know

Most likely everything is fine. The only other option is that if it is double-side ram, one side is failing. Kinda of rare though

Well, I tried a quick google search for you, but that was fruitless.

Downlaod and install one the free programs below that will identify your system's components. It should tell you the answer. Everest is prolly the best. But any should do fine

Get Sissoft Sandra HERE

Belarc HERE

Everest Home Edition HERE

If you have probs interpreting the results, post back. You're looking to have it report gfx as something with 64MB of ram. That would explain the "missing" 64MB you report

look at your video summary.

"Display:
Video Adapter RADEON IGP 345M (64 MB)
Video Adapter RADEON IGP 345M (64 MB)
3D Accelerator ATI Mobility Radeon 7000 IGP (RS250M)
Monitor Digital Flat Panel (1024x768) "

see that? it is taking 64mb from system memory as vidoe memory. you could probably mess around and change the amount of ram used for video memory form the bios.

on startup, when the compaq screen shows. press F1 to get to bios.

The Radeon IGP shares the system memory, that's why you are "missing" 64MB.
My sister had the same result when she upgraded to 512MB, she's only at 448MB now.

Well, I assume you don't game on this laptop, in that case the GPU would need very little memory.
I have no idea what would be OK, but 16-32MB would probably be enough. Besides, losing 64MB to the GPU won't affect your performance to much.

You can change dedicated video memory in the BIOS most likely. I recommend that if overall system memory is slightly more crucial for the laptop itself, lower the memory dedication for the VGA to 32mb. If you go as low as 16mb, you may get lag with many current OS's even in 2D mode.

Thanks guys..i dont game much on this lappie.Ya even without that 64 mb my system performance is good.I only wanted to know why it was detecting less RAM.... So i think i will leave that 64mb for video adapter...as it is.

Once again...thanks for all ur help.
