So I recently bought a house and I am wanting to stock my bar. I have already bought a few bottles of my personal favorites but I am wanting to fill in the rest of the bar with all the essentials.

I want to keep it to the basics for the moment. Just liquors and not liqueurs. As for price a little on the cheaper end would be nice as my buddies like to drink. I'm trying to get 2 or 3 different bottles for each category so any other suggestions would be great.

Rum
Tequila
Gin
Whiskey
Vodka

For rum I have a bottle of Bacardi and Bacardi Anejo. As well as some Capt. Morgan 100poof (Friend bought this one.)

For Teq. I'm thinking of a bottle of 1800 silver.

No idea on Gin as I don't drink it

Whiskey I have a bottle of Crown and some Segram 7

Vodka thinking about a bottle of Absolut

I recommend one expensive and one cheap bottle. Dont ever tell anyone what you gave them.
For Vodka: Belvedere is the good shit.

Rum - Mt. Gay Extra Old, or if you want a spiced get Sailor Jerry's
Tequilla - Eh...not a favorite but we normally keep Sauza Conmemorativo around
Gin - Magellan or Tanqueray Ten
Whiskey - Jameson 12 year, Woodford Reserve, Maker's Mark
Vodka - Cheap shit for mixing. Grey Goose, Belevdere or Ketel One for straight

Cheap bottle first, nicer bottle second.
Rum You are set. Unless you want to buy some more expensive sipping stuff.

Gin Seagrams and Tanqueray Ten/Bombay Sapphire
Whiskey Jim Beam and Knob Creek (Tennessee) Johnnie Walker Red and A nice single malt (Scotch)

Tito's vodka, everything else you sound good to go. Oh maybe some bombay sapphire gin.

I also like the idea of keeping 1 cheaper mixer around for big party nights or for people who don't really know of care and then 1 good bottle for when you want straight up alcohol, or when you are trying to impress someone. For the really popular items, I'll keep 3 rankings.
So for like a 1.75 liter I use cheap mixers= $12-$15 (like a popov vodka or seagram's 7). Medium = $22-$25 (like Bicardi, ). High end = $40+ (like Belvedere, Jack Daniels, etc.). You can go super high end for some scotch and stuff, but most people won't really appreciate or know.

Right now I mainly use all of my liquor to mix. Tequila would be about the only thing I won't mix. (Maybe a Teq sunrise for the ladies).

What would be a good sipping liquor?

New Amsterdam is a pretty decent cheaper gin...good for every day goodness. Bombay Sapphire is good on the higher end.

Also good to have some fortified wines up there. E&J VSOP Brandy is good for mixing with egg nog, and their XO is pretty decent to drink alone. A good (expensive) cognac is Pierre Ferrand. Port is good if you want to impress, as well.

gin - hendricks (rather inexpensive and yet very high quality and flavorful, though not really a london dry gin so you'll want one of those as well)
vodka - titos (inexpensive yet very high quality, no need to have two different bottles. vodka is for frat boys and girls anyway.)
bourbon - jack (yes i know not actually bourbon) or jim for cheap, something made in small batches for sipping (helps to have a good liquor guy)
rye - old overholt, sazerac 6 year (rye is a must for cocktails)
canadian - don't bother, that shit blows
scotch - johnnie walker red or black, and something old in small batches for sipping. the macallan is quite accessible.

other essentials:
bitters. angostura is the most common. they come in many flavors. you'll want several different varieties
simple syrup or bartender's sugar, and sugar cubes
vermouth, both sweet and dry (martinis are supposed to be at least 1:1 vermouth to gin)
campari (which is actually a bitter), absinthe, brandy (especially for making brandied cherries, which you should also have)

Bullshit.

Above the bar a sign reads, “We employ the wave-the-cork-over-the-glass method or, as Sir Winston Churchill described the perfect dry martini, ‘Glance at the vermouth bottle briefly while pouring the juniper distillate freely.’”

Those "other essentials" are not essentials for anyone younger than 40.

if you're in college and all you drink are vodka cranberries and jager bombs then yes. if you've graduated from college and no longer feel the need to drink simply to get blasted then no. real cocktails are making a huge comeback right now amongst the yuppie set.

Bullshit.

while tasty, it's not a martini, it's just gin, maybe with some olive juice.
