Hi Guys Im new here but just looking for some advice, I just built a new rig and its a power full bit of kit (see signature), jumped straight into overclocking managed to get the ASUS P5W DH / E6600 Combo upto 3.7Ghz using only 1.55Volts and its totally rock solid stable, the board wont let me have anymore than 415FSB max..
Anyway thats not the problem my new EVGA Superclocked 7950GX2 is, stock settings on the superclocked are 550/1400, however if I run 3dMark06, as soon as the 2 HDR/SM3.0 tests come up at the end, the screens starts to flicker during the test then after a short while it locks up with garbled graphics, If I slow the core down to like 530mhz its seems to be stable, but I was looking to overclock the superclocked not slow it down!, I've read on other forums that people with stock 7950GX2's are able to hit 600-650mhz core on AIR, so I dont understand why my card is so poor.
I started to think that maybe my 580W PSU is not powerful enough to power this rig (at least the PCI-E anyway) when its maxxed out? My PSU has dual 12V rails, however on the side of the box for the EVGA superclocked it states that the PSU requirement is at LEAST 27Amps to GFX card, the booklet for my Hyper X PSU states that the PSU only supplys a max of 20amps to the PCI-E card and that this 20A is shared between the Mobo, Hdd's, and other peripherals in the system, basically the only thing thats get to use the 2nd 18A rail of my PSU is the mobo's 12v connector. So im assuming that the GFX problem could be power related? not enough juice maybe? although surely some of the required 27amps for the GFX is coming through the motherboards pci-express connector right? I read somewhere about 75w of power can be drawn from the mobo without even using the seperate pci-e power connector. Im confused, if I have a faulty GFX board I could do with knowing. Any help much appreciated.
