ok well i bought a e6400 that suppose to hit 3.6ghz im using a gigabyte DS3 rev 2. I can get my cpu to 7X465 but when i change to an 8X multiplier my computer doesnt run stable at all even at 8X400. Im not being held back by the memory i got some Buffalo Firestix pc8000. If anyone knows wut i could be doing wrong or if it my hardware either the cpu or motherboard holding me back? ne advice would be great. Thanks guys.

*edit* 4-4-4-10 im actualy not to sure about how much voltage the bios are realy weird its at +0.4 im pretty sure its at 2.2V

How much voltage are you running through those Firestix, and at what timings?

Start at 401x8, you maybe on the 1066 fsb strap at 400, and make sure to set vcore manually don't leave it on auto.

whats the highest you can get it with an 8x multiplier? And what voltage are you running/what are your temps. Also you said 7x465 is stable, but how do you define stable, can it run dual prime95 instances for 24 hours, or does it just seem stable during regular use?

havnt realy played aroudn with the 8X multiplier seeing how it cant run stable over 8x400 im runnin at 1.375V but i had it up to 1.42 before just for testing purposes. I never bothered runnin prime95 i just jumped on a video game for about 4 hours and ran 3dmark06.

This is your answer. On all of Gigabyte's 965-based motherboards, the 1333 strap doesn't kick in until 401 FSB. Of course, you may very well not be able to do 3.2 Ghz with 1.375v of vcore. Set your vcore to 1.4275 in the BIOS, before attempting 8x401.

What voltage were you using for 7x465? Auto? If so at 465fsb your board was most likely giving over 1.5v. Keep uping the volts until you get it stable, my E6400 will boot to windows at 401x8 with less but I have to go to 1.475 to get it completely stable in all stress tests.

Something here just doesn't make sense, 8x401=3208 should be less stressful on the CPU and everything else than 7x465=3255 and should work on the same or less vcore, assuming your memory settings and everything else is the same. Maybe it's a bios issue? Have you udated to the latest bios for that board?

You've definately got a problem if you can't update the bios. Are you trying to update via a windows utility or a DOS utility?
