I'm looking to upgrade certain aspects of my computer, and video card is one of them.

I have a Athalon 950 w/ 256 ddr memory and a Kyro II video card.

I tried to play CnC Generals, but it was a bit of a joke. My plans are to upgrade my processor to 1.5, my memory to 512, and my video card to... well i don't know..thats' where I need the help.

I'm looking to spend about 150 on something that will last a little bit. Stricly games

If it helps, my older computer system with a Athlon 1800+ (1.53ghz), 512mb DDR PC2100 Samsung memory, Geforce Ti4200 64mb ran a score of 9200 on 3DMark2001 without being OCed. Played Warcraft 3 in 1280x1024 in in highest 32bit resolution fine, Max Payne ran fine in high resolution with 2x AA/turned off, but trying to play NBA Live 2k3 in high resolution sucked pretty bad. (Mid resolution was okay)

I agree with Scahen that Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti4200 is the best bang for your buck considering you're pursuing a entry level processor in a Athlon 1.5ghz aka 1800+. Cards are plentiful around the forums and posting, so picking one up for about $80 is realistic. Ati 9500 though is a bit more pricey, but better suited for the future (Direct x9) and handles FSAA/AA better than a Ti4200. You can pick a 9500 for approx $105-$125, and a pro for $135-$155 used in forums, or refurb at newegg.com.

Best of luck to you and your upgrades. If you're upgrading for Doom 3 release during the holidays, well......... save a bit more $$$ and wait to be safe.

As far as ATI cards go, get a 9500 128mb non-pro. If it will convert to a 9800 by the software hack, good for you, and it is at NewEgg for exactly $150. I am an ATI fanboy, so I don't really know how they rank to Nvidia, but if you want to go ati then go with the 9500. If it will hack to 9800, then you are in heaven.

Not exactely right there. Only the original 9500`s could be hacked, and thats only to 9700s, the reason that they could be hacked is because they were built on 9700 PCBs, so the 256bit memory bus would still be intact. Most newer ones are built on a different PCB, and so the chances of the hack is limited.

As hacking to 9800, thats not exactely true either. The 9500 is a derivitive of the 9700, and R300 core, the 9800 (R350)is a different core is several respects, most noticably is the inclusion of a F-Buffer, which neither the 9500 or 9700 has, and there is no way that they can be hacked to have a f-buffer. I think what you mean, is that a 9700`s drivers could be modified to use the 9800 driver path, which is about 5% faster, but there is now no need for that, as the new Cat3.4 includes this new driver path for the 9700.

IMO, get a 9500pro cos they are plently fast enough for most things, and with fsaa/af on, are significantly faster than a Ti4600. And judging from some of the Doom benchmarks, it`ll play the game at sensable resolutions and detail settings with playable frame rates.
Of course, the other option, is to wait until Doom3s release, by which time there will probably be a new performance card around the corner, which`ll drop the current ones on price.

BoomAM, good post. You know your sh**. He has a good point, though I still favor hacking to 9700(corrected!).

If you want something that'll "last you a bit" I suggest you go for an ATI 9500 Pro. It'll offer you better performance than the Ti4200 and is more future proof. There's an OEM version going for $150

HERE

When I say better performance, I don't jsut mean raw framerate, I mean better image quality too. With the 9500 Pro you'll have better framerates with AA and anisotropic filtering enabled. For $150, there's no better deal.

Just get a cheap Nvidia GF4-Ti4xxx and not any Nvidia MX. Or get at least a ATI Radeon 9000 if you are a fanboy of ATI. Both of these cards are the sweetspot for gamers that ain't got a lot of cash.

If you hit the lottry, then buy 2 Nvidia 5900 ultra's and send one to me! Or two 9800Pro's and still send me one... I am not devoted to any brand of hardware.

NTAC, is you can find/afford the pro version, then get it, if not, then the 9500 is a good card anyway, try using one of the mods to see if it can be converted into a 9700.

I going to DL Kazmaps and further Kazmaps when i start getting into C&C Generals again.
Im concentrating on Vice City/Zelda for the moment, and on the side, College Work. lol
Apart from the lack of initial building space, Kazmap 1 was great. It was`nt too crowded with scenery, which alot of 3rd party maps do, things were well set out, and most importently, no slowdown due to poor map building skills.
BTY, in Kazmap2, i notice that theres a river seperating the two bases, how many crossing are there for the river, cos for some reason, the little minimap things never shows bridges, which is very annoying.

Keep up the good work Xerosleep.
