My computer has gotten to be unstable and as a first step I plan to reinstall Windows XP. I going to put the install CD in the drive and click install. Is there a way I can do this without having to reinstall drivers and other appls?

Thanks

It freezes, and I am not able to move the mouse. The reboot after it crashes, it checks usually my C and E drives but indicates that there are no problems with them. My D drive has 160 kb of bad sectors on it and I have just ordered a new hard drive from Newegg to replace it. I have tested my RAM and it passed. I have run Norton Disk Doctor on all my hard drives and it has not detected any problems with them.

This has been going on for about a week or two.

I suspect that the instability may be caused by a recent Windows Update or some other software installation.

You can load the Windows CD and try the repair option to see if that helps.

Here's another suggestion. Since the problem only started about a week or 2 ago. If you have system restore turned on. Do a rollback to a time before your system updates. The rollback feature should have a restore point everytime you do a major system update or install. If it doesn't, then just try to remember the date when everything was fine. And rollback to it.

Have you tried checking for viruses? Have you run stress tests on your memory and CPU?

I have run Norton Antivirus a couple of times since the instability hit. I stress tested my RAM but not the CPU.

Thanks for your reply. I'm a advocate for getting rid of the post count. People seem to think it means something more than the number times a person posts on this forum.

Thanks for your reply. I turned off Restore because it increased the boot time.
