I have an IBM 20.5gig as my main drive (1 partion), and a Maxtor 30gig (3 partions) I want to put in as a slave, just so I can use Ghost to put the data on the IBM over to the Maxtor.

I set the Maxtor as slave (the IBM is obviously already the master), and at the boot screen all is well, until it goes into windows. It boots into the Maxtor. I went into safe mode, and the first partion of the Maxtor is now the C drive, the IBM is now the D drive, and the other two partions of the Maxtor are E, and G respectively. Why, and how can I correst this?

I was told over the phone while at work today that you can make a boot disk with Ghost (it's a DOS program), but after reading the cover of the case I noticed that the disk thing is just for a recovery. Is there a way I can use a start up disk(like start puter with CD-ROM support, or something)?

I tried to use a command prompt, and tried it in DOS mode, but no luck. The same guy I talked to at work ("mattyrug" a new member here) has used it in DOS mode himself (said it was faster too), but I can't figure out how to do it myself.

I am supposed to trade this drive (the IBM) away later today. So this really sucks.

Any ideas?

If you're using Windows 9x/ME, it's a limitation of DOS.
DOS assigns drive letters to the Primary partitions first, then to extended partitions.
So, since you have primary partitions on both the IBM and Maxtor, the Maxtor (being Primary master) will get C:, the IBM's primary partition will get D:, and the Maxtor's extended partition wil get the remaining drive letters assigned to it's logical partitions.
Apparently you do not have any extended partitions on the IBM.

If you really want to get rid of it, you can copy all of the info to the Maxtor, fdisk and delete the primary partition on the IBM, and make the whole thing one big extended partition. With no primary partition, it won't get a drive letter preceding the extended partitions on the Maxtor.

Read the "read me" file on the Ghost cd to make the boot disk. It explains all that.

bump, just asking, have you ever used xcopy? it works pretty good too. i think it doesn;t like long filenames though.

Double check your jumpers ,the only way the Maxtor will boot first is if you set it to Master. Also you did'nt say but the Maxtor should be on the secondary IDE channel, data transfer will go much quicker.

Most hard drive disk utilities will copy the drives for you much faster than ghost.
I use Data Lifegaurd Tools all the time it works flawlesly & is simple to use.(must have a WD drive plugged in to use).I'm sure IBM or Maxtor have software that will do the same thing.

Diesel Dan: The IBM is set to master, and shows up as the master on the boot screen, but it boots into the Maxtor instead. I am trying to copy all the info to the Maxtor, but need to get into windows first. The Maxtor has a windows install from an Athlon system (the system I am talking about here is a PIII), and it is a screwed up install anyway. The only drive in the system right now is the IBM. I just want to move that data to the Maxtor. So I can give Cloud X the IBM. When I add the Maxtor as a slave it takes over as the C drive, and I can't figure out why. I've used Ghost before, and I've never had this problem before.

BT7990: I would, but it won't convert it to a wordpad file. I refuse to install office 97 in this system, because O 97 is the biggest POS memory hog program I have ever used. So if you could do a little copy, and paste job for me. I will be extremely appreciative.

Cloud-X: No I never have, but the program (Ghost)is not the problem. My inability to get it to boot into the IBM drive is. I'm trying for ya buddy, but it's not playing well with others.

Toro 45: I have quadruple checked the jumpers, and tried every configuration possible. What do you mean by secondary IDE channel? You mean the one I would normally (I use SCSI ROMS) use for the CD-ROMS? If so I hope that works, and I will try it. I am not worried about speed though. I just want to do it. BTW if you, or anyone for that matter could show me the exact diagram on how to set the jumpers. I would be very happy. Like I said though. On boot up it shows the Maxtor as the slave, but then boots into it. And yes I have the boot order set right in the BIOS.

Again just to clarify. I don't need another program, and I am pretty sure I don't have to change my jumper settings. What I need is a way to get it to boot into the IBM, which it should be doing anyway, when the Maxtor is added. Or a way for me to just run this program (Ghost) outside of windows. I simply want to image the IBM (my now working drive) to the Maxtor (which has a windows install from a different system in the first partition on it).

So anybody with any ideas at all. Please help me, and Cloud X finish our deal. You will be remembered in my will, or at the least you will get a huge thank you.

Thanks guys.

I use ghost all the time for making backup images of my systems and it works great. To copy an image of a disk (your IBM) to another disk (the maxtor) the drives have to be on separate IDE channels as Toro mentioned. What kind of mobo are you using? It should have 2 IDE ATA/33 channels (Primary and Secondary) and possibly 2 IDE ATA/66 channels if it is a newer board. Try putting the IBM as master on the primary ATA/33 IDE1 channel and putting the maxtor as master on the secondary ATA/33 IDE2 channel. When you reboot it should boot off the IBM and assign it as C:\ since it is on the primary IDE channel. The maxtor partitions should then be assigned D: E: F: . If that all works then run ghost from Dos by making a Win98 boot floppy and putting ghost.exe on it. Run ghost and select the functions from the "Local" menu and follow the prompts.

Soyo SY-6VCA. So two 66's.

I'm gonna try that after some sleep. My second channel is empty anyway since my roms are running off my SCSI card.

Last couple of times I did it. I just put the source drive on the same cable, and it worked fine. I then just ran it in windows off the CD-ROM drive without a problem. That's why I'm at such a loss. I didn't expect a problem like this. I feel bad, because I was supposed to swap this with Cloud X earlier today, and I was less then 15 minutes from his house anyway.

So now he has to wait, and I have to waste more time on my next day off (wed).

Fortunetly he's been understanding.

Thanks Cloud, and thank you all for your help once again. I hope this works.
