Need help to install a CPU fan.

I got a DP5-6H11 CPU fan&sink, on the bottom of
the sink, there is a paper stick on it by pink
color glue, and there is a thin layer of plastic
film on the paper, should I tear the paper and
clean the glue before install?
If I should tear the paper, why they put it there
? I am confused.

take the paper off, then take off the pink stuff, put thin layer of thermal paste on your cpu then place the heatsink. pink stuff is the thermal pad, those are no good. if you don't have thermal paste stop by radio shack and get some.

The pink stuff is phase-change material. You would remove the paper first before installing. After your CPU heats up a bit, the material kind of "melts" and forms a better thermal bond, allowing heat to be more easily dissippated.

Sometimes this material isn't exactly centered over the cpu core when you install your heatsink, so watch that if you're going to use it.

I would recommend as the above poster. Remove it all using Goo-gone or some other cleaner and then thoroughly clean off with rubbing alcohol because the removal solvents can leave a residue. Then get thermal paste from Radio Shack or order Artic Silver II from an online computer supply vendor. Artic Silver is considered the best thermal paste for this sort of thing, but will run you $8-10 not counting shipping.

Beware, you just have to use a small dab of paste. Like half a grain of rice. Dab it on your finger first and then use your finger and spread it/rub it on the core and just the core. Put on your heatsink and frag away!

here's a step by step instruction applying paste. it's a instruction for applying arctic silver but it's same for regular thermal paste also.
