hey all, this one is really pissing me off.

I had a an 8 disk raid 5 array using all the same drives (wd green 1tb), and I have retired that server, and now am trying to format them and sell off the parts. So, the first thing I did was disconnect each drive from the 2220, connect to standard sata port, and do an erase using hd tune pro. All successful, no errors. Then I want to make sure I can access them from two computers for my own piece of mind. First few disks had no issues, and now im at a dead stand still with the rest/

So my immediate issue is that when I physically remove the hard drive from the raid 5 array, and connect to a standard sata port, I see the drive in windows management, but am told I cannot initialize it because an i/o error, or if I can initialize and format it, I cannot read on it another computer. These disks are being formatted in ntfs, mbr.

Research on the i/o error so far tells me that it has some raid information stuck on it, and I have to reconnect it to the controller, delete the array, and then do it again. Okay, so I do that. I reconnect them to the array, deleted the array information the raid configuration utility. All the drives show as initialized still in the raid controller bios gui, I cannot seem to remove or reset them any other way, so its either initialize or configured (for raid use). So again, I remove them and connect to a standard sata port but I have weird results. Some drives show up on that system, and allow me to initialize and format them. Then I connect them to another system as a test, but they do not appear in disk management. Other times, they do not appear in disk management at all. Out of 9 drives, I only got 4 working that I can actually view on multiple systems. As for the other 5, I keep hitting this wall.

So, I tried to create a new raid 5 with those 5 disks. I initialize and create a new raid 5 in the controller bios, done. I then delete the raid 5 in the controller bios. All drives still show as initiliazed, but when I connect them to standard sata port, same thing happens. I see the drive in disk management, I can initialize and format, but cannot see it on another computer. At this point it should be a standard hard drive.

I have tried using disk part clean command to wipe the drive, but that didnt help. Had no luck if viewing these drives on an external usb either so as to try dban. So, how do I successfully remove these drives from the array so I can use them in non-raid on a standard sata port?

Have you tried disabling the raid functions of the raid card itself and then initializings the drives as jbods?

Edit: hmm looking at manual for RocketRaid? 2220 I don't see a disable raid controller option
ie: use it just to connect jbods

but I do remember it being a bios option in an old Dell Perc controller I had

set the drive mode to IDE and fdisk/format entirely. don't forget the mbr/gpt - it might tattoo the drives in a few places.

maybe they do have sector errors that weren't noticed before when they were raided up? Was it a full overwrite wipe of each one?

hmm - have you tried Emulex's fix?

Else put it on Ebay as an ex-IRS disk array - someone may jump on it :awe:
