Need help upgrading old 350 to 1ghz via slotket

I have an old gateway with a PII 350Mhz Slot 1 CPU, and I want to upgrade it to a celly 1.0a ghz by using a slotket.

This is basically all of the informationf from gateway that I have to work with:

It says it's a "Intel Pentium II motherboard w/ Integrated Audio".. no brand name or manufacturer model number.

Somewhere on that page, it says that the motherboard supports a maximum CPU of 450Mhz. Anyone think that I'd be able to do this upgrade? I know the motherboard supports FSB of 66/100, but I'm worried about not being able to set the multiplier high enough for the 1.0ghz celeron. Any ideas?

I doubt you can do it. You have a Oem boad that was made for a select few CPUs. To upgrade a CPU, even without a slocket, you need the companey to update the BIOS to support the CPU. And when you through in a slocket to the mix that just makes it that much harder.

Better to just get a new board, CPU, and case and move over your other parts to the new system. You can get a 1Ghz Duron and a Socket A KT333 board for around $100, then add in $50-60 for a Case with power supply. Will be a lot faster than you have and not break the bank.

Thanks... there is a recent BIOS update, but the readme doesn't even tell what it does. I may flash it and see if any more options are available. I hate these gateway OEM boards.

I'll probably just keep the 350 that's in there now, or put a 450 in if I find one for $20 or less

I'm just trying to salvage this old computer that I got from a friend... i'll be putting together a totally new system around christmas more than likely (I hope those memory prices drop again!!)

You will not be able to easilly do the Celeron that has 256K cache (I think that's the "a" version). That particular chip uses a different voltage and something changed with the BUS too. There are workarounds that involve wires and/or solder and it has been successful for some BX chipset folks--but no guarantees.

You'd have better luck with a Celeron 850-900 and you'd still see a good performance boost over the 350.
Most likely the board will boot up fine with those CPU's... just have to set the voltage on the sloket to the right setting and it should work... but again, no guarantees. If they say the support Celeron 566 or 600 (FC-PGA) then you should be fine with the 850-900 as the only real difference is the FSB and you already have a board that supports 100MHz FSB.
