Here are the ways you can do this:

1) Have 1 of your PCs be the server, with 2 NICs... 1 connected to the DSL modem and the other connected to your other PC... Then run NAT software like Windows ICS...

2) Buy a DSL router... and simply connect your DSL modem to the router and your two PCs to the router... This is the easiest way but costs more money...

3) Get an old PC and run Linux on it... THis PC can be your server... Connect the DSL modem to this PC, and connect a hub/switch to the other NIC of this PC... Then connect your other 2 PCs to the hub... This way you dont have to use one of your useful PC as the server as in method 1...

What i did was this: put 2 nic's in 1st pc, and 1 in the 2nd. Hook the cable modem to the one nic in the the 1st pc, then a crossover cable in the other one, then connecting to the 2nd. Then run ICS. Works great for me.

I need to share a dial-up connection between 2 computers, but I want each computer to have the ability to dialup and share the connection with the other computer.
Both boxes have modems connected to the same phoneline. I have a NIC for each and a crossover cable to run between them. One box runs ME, the other runs 95. I want both boxes to be able to act as the server and share the connection with the other. Only one server at a time of course.
Can I use Sygate or Winroute to accomplish this and what will I need to do?
Or is this simply not possible and one box will need to be the server all the time?

KawLiga, it could be very messy but you could do it. What you would need to do is get a software that allows you to create a "Network Profile", this way you have to coordinate with the user of the other machine and decide who is going to be the server this time around. Once having decided, you use the "server profile" and then login, while on the 2nd machine you use the "client profile" which and switch the next time..

This can be rather a lot to do each time you wanna get onto the 'Net. The easier bet would definetly be to just go with a single server and a single client scenario so that you aren't switching profiles. The newer PROXY/connection sharing software are smart enough to realize that when you are using a dialup connection, if the connection has not been made and a client attempts to access the Internet, it will automatically dial to your ISP and make the connection..

This is a better path for sharing a single 'Net connection, regardless the type, IMHO..

Also if you want to be able to dialin without switching profiles or whatever, and you have some cash, you can buy one of those dialup nat routers.

Since I'm setting this up for a friend, I think he'd rather just set up one box as server and the other as client.

Now, if I use Winroute, Sygate, ICS, etc., will the client box use an internal ip? I'd prefer to keep everything setup as dynamic if possible.

Cyph3r, are you saying that if the client tries to access the inet while the server is not connected that the server will automatically attempt to connect to the inet (dialup)? This is assuming that the server box is turned on.

Thanks. You've been very helpful.

pugh:

Go to HomePCLAN to get instructions on how to setup your network...

Windows ICS only comes with win98SE or later OS's... so you dont get ICS on win98...
