Need help with 1090T vs 1055T

For the most part, it looks like the 1090T is $300 vs $200 for the 1055T. If one of my main purposes is encoding video, a multi-threaded process that can max out both cores of my E6750, is the 1090T worth considering for an extra $100?

For either CPU, I would be adding a Noctua or Zalman CPU cooler. And while I'm on that, does anyone have any strong pros/cons for either of those CPU coolers?

Do you really expect to get another 33% more performance out of the 1090 compared to the 1055T? IDTS. The only things that seem to be able to hog all 6 cores of my 1055 is Prime95. I have OC'ed it to 4Ghz on a MSI 890GX + Arctic Freezer with little skill and effort.

You can get to 4.0 by upping the FSB to 242 and let Turbo Core do the rest (ups the multiplier to 16.5 for 3 of the cores) otherwise you would need to jack up the FSB to 286Mhz which is... well yah.

Spending over $30-40 on a CPU cooler is sort of like wasting money on fins that you could have spent on silicon.

The stock cooler is pretty inadequate though, loud as heck.

Noise was definitely part of the equation. As another member so eloquently described the x6 stock fan's 'whine', it will "make you want to put a shotgun in your mouth". Sure it was qualified as an overstatement, but still hilarious.

For the price of the 1090T you can get the 1055T + Noctua cooler. Go for the 1055T + Noctua.

What's the difference between being unlocked and not? I thought it was the ability to OC, but have read that the 1055T is still pretty OC-friendly...

When the CPU multiplier is unlocked all you have to do to overclock the CPU is increase the multiplier. This avoids changing any other settings, only changing the CPU clock speed...but it looks like a lot of the 1055T's can hit 4GHz so I personally don't think it's worth the extra $ for the 1090T. Going from a C2D to either one of these processors is going to be a tremendous improvement, especially if you can utilize all 6 cores. Besides, $100 can get you an extra 4GB of RAM.

That really would depend on if your current hardware could handle the increased bus speeds, not to mention the extra stress of the OC on the components. For those who don't want to worry about that stress or bus speeds, the unlocked multiplier makes overclocking much easier.

Of course. But considering the OP's plan, I assume he's intent on building a system that can handle it.

I went with the 1055t. Put the H50 on it and it hits 4GHz easily. If you are lazy get the 1090, otherwise spend the extra 100 on a cooler.

How about the motherboard to go with them? Whether the 1055T or the 1090T, is there any reason to get higher than a 770 board? Or are the only benefits Crossfire, SLI, more USB 3.0, etc? If the processor speeds and OC abilities are the same, then I would just as soon stay with 770 Gigabyte or Asus as I don't need onboard video. Thoughts?

If you have good ram and a motherboard, go with a 1055 (if you want to save a bit of cash). In hindsight I would have gone with the 1090 as I have DDR2 and a 790GX motherboard which I don't think can be pushed as high for HTT as some of the 890 boards with DDR3. Also, it seems the 1090 needs less voltage to get to 4GHz as seen in the OCing database.

This is news (good news, if so) to me. Has this been clearly observed that the 8xx boards can support higher HT ref clock than the 7xx boards, or an outright feature/improvement of the 8 series over 7?

YOU SHOULD FORGET about amd and get the 975 at mc

Go nef somewhere else. This is a technical forum.

Whats better to run the X6 on, DDR2 or DDR3?

I have 8G of DDR2 in my Q9650 machine that I could split up to cut the cost on an AMD x6 platform.

DDR3 will give you more memory bandwidth, but in most everyday tasks they are equal, considering you can run DDR2 @ 5-5-5-1T as high as possible. AMD setup is tuned more for tighter timings; 1333MHz @ 6-6-6-1T, 1600MHz @ 7-7-7-1T, etc... are optimal.

Some processors clock higher using DDR3, maybe because their internal DDR2 controllers aren't as good as their DDR3 one, and vice versa.

DDR3 is better. Thubans really come to life with CPU-NB @2.8 GHz+ and DDR3-1600+. And from what I've seen HTT overclocking for Thuban is quite a bit better with 890GX/890FX than 700 series chipsets. Especially for 4 sticks of memory.
