There is a bee hive residing right next to my mailbox. They are a serious problem as the mailman and I have already been stung. I went from my parents house to the dorms to an apartment so I've never had to deal with anything like this before. Do I dump insecticide down the hole? Do I just cover it with a rock or something? I realize the best option is to hire a professional but I'd prefer not to do that since it'll cost more money that way. ATOT please help!!

Move some of those rocks out of the way and soak the area in insect poison.

I've read that ammonia works well. You should be able to sneak up there at night (the cooler the better) and dump some down the hole.

Gas is the common choice but that's a little more risky.

Holy shit well they are all underground so I can't just throw stuff at them... I hope there aren't that many but they are constantly coming in and out...

go buy some bee killer spray from a local hardware store... spray on hole, repeat till dead. Or get gasoline, pour in hole, throw match. The second option is far more entertaining.

You can also combine the bug spray and fire into a flamethrower which is also entertaining, but raises some safety issues.

Wait a second, are these actually bees, or are you one of those people who thinks bees, wasps and hornets are interchangeable?

Either way, if you have been stung guess it's time to get rid of them. Just get some bee killer and spray the crap out of the area. If you can get close just squirt it down the hole.

Wait till night time where it's nice and cool. The Bees/Wasps should be slower at night and mostly in the hive.

Wear a coat/gloves/hood/googles/etc or whatever makes you feel protected. I liked to wear jeans and tape the shins above the shoes.

Grab wasp/bee killer spray (2.99 at home depot or w/e).
Shoot the hole/entrance where they come out of for a few seconds and run like hell.
Post pics of bravery/stupidity afterwards.

I actually hate that link. He killed a swarm, not a nest. They would have been on their way if he'd just left them alone.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swarming_(honey_bee)

A swarm of bees sometimes frightens people, though the bees are usually not aggressive at this stage of their life cycle. This is principally due to the swarming bees' lack of a hive to defend and their interest in finding a new nesting location for their queen. This does not mean that bees from a swarm will not attack if they perceive a threat; however, most bees only attack in response to intrusions against their hive. Swarm clusters, hanging off of a tree branch, will move on and find a suitable nesting location in a day or two. Beekeepers are sometimes called to capture swarms that are cast by feral honey bees or from the hives of inattentive beekeepers.

Yea I think they're just normal bees, they aren't aggressive like wasps.. they're just in a really bad spot. I guess the consensus is just to buy some bug poison and pour it down the hole.. thats what I first thought of doing but wasn't sure if it would just make them angry or decimate the flora or something.

Attack them at dark. Give them a sleep from which they won't wake. Pour a few ounces of gasoline directly in the hole. For the love of mercy, man... don't light the gas!!! (Idiot youngsters nowadays always want fire - listen to your elders, dammit) The gas is lethal to them, and they'll spend the last few moments of their pitiful lives writhing in agony while their babies wail for salvation that won't come. If you feel the urge, this is the time to let out a heart-felt, throaty laugh of dominance. You are the man of the property, and no 6-legged Hell-spawned beast will ever have the upper hand over you!!!

For bonus points, the next morning you can f*ck the hole as a warning to others, if you like.

I once dual wielded raid cans while making my way to a hive that had setup residence in a box in my backyard. Once I got to the hive, I thrust a bug bomb into the box and ran away screaming like a little girl.

:awe:

I would still light a fire though....just not right on the spot i dumped it all. I would make a trail of gasoline that goes back about 5 feet....light...then run like hell.

Those are most likely yellow jackets. As others have said douse in hornet/wasp killer in the evening, soak the whole thing. That stuff kills them instantly.

Move the rocks out of the way first before you spray, otherwise you might miss their hole.
Another option is to just cover the whole hive area with like 100 pounds of dirt ... it should suffocate any that are in the nest, and confuse the rest.

EDIT
I should mention that by me, they usually build their nests under the roof overhangs of houses, also had them nest in my patio umbrella once ...

I like to knock the nests down with a stick, or spray them with a hose .... it't cheaper than buying poison .. though often they will rebuild. Side note: It stings a bit when they sting you!

Kill them with poison!

I sprayed a wasp nest that was up on the roof about a month ago. Started spraying. The wasps came boiling out to try to kill me. My stream of death was bringing them down before they could get to me. I could tell my can of wasp killer was getting light and about to run out and the wasps were still coming. There was no quick escape from the rooftop so I let loose with the scream of a whiny girl. My can sputtered out its last and I thought I was doomed. Luckily for me the wasps had run out of soldiers just in time and I was able to claim total victory and climb down the ladder with some dignity intact.

Get the spray that comes out as a stream of foam. Not the foggish/mist type. Go out early in the morning (when it's colder) and seriously coat the area. If they're moving, keep spraying. The foam/streaming type takes them out in flight.

<-- takes care of yellowjackets that way.
