Need help with choosing DVD burner and reader drive

Hey all..

I've been reading all this info about drives and I can't figure out what I should get so I thought I'd post my concerns and what I need. Then I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I'm looking to buy a pair of drives. One for reading dvds and one for writing DVD-Rs. I don't want the reader to be locked when ripping and I'd prefer a quality burn over anything else like noise/speed, etc. So here are the two drives and what I'm looking for summarized:

DVD-R burner (all the other formats are ok too, I just burn with DVD-R)
--Must make quality burns above all else
--Must be SATA
--Must have Lightscribe
--Other things like noise, speed, etc come after the above two items

DVD Rip Drive
--Must be able to rip dvds fast, not at 2x or something way slow
--Must be SATA
--Have a good ability to deal with minor scratches, etc

If someone could point me in the right direction, I sure would appreciate it. My head is killing me as I can't figure out what ones I should get or even look at for that matter.

So far I've found nothing wrong with Samsung's, so it'd be a 183L and a 163 for me.

The only caveat applies to all DVD burners ... there will always be /some/ media out there that your particular burner doesn't like. Buy small quantities at first, and then settle with what worked best.

Oh yeah, I'm aware of that issue. Thanks for the suggestions. It'll be interesting to see what others suggest to see if there is a favor to a certain brand and/or model drive.

I like my Lite-On LH-20A1P-186 (it's IDE but the sister model is SATA only via a bridge chip anyhow) and it works well for everything but it rips audio CDs at dog slow rates. I have an LG GSA-H62NK that I need to install and test in that regard.

Try the Sony DRU835A ... dirt cheap at $89.99 ... maybe less elsewhere
I have used Sony drives before and have been very satisfied with them

Opps .. Just noticed this is an EIDE version .. not sure if they have a SATA
model yet .. but at that price, I would hook it up to IDE or buy an IDE card
to make it work ... personally, I do not yet trust SATA
