I don't want to start another thread but I had a table question. This is a test page from the actual web site with the tables, css menu, and font changes. I know the color hasn't changed but I haven't found what I want yet. I decided to go three rows across for future expandability. My main question is, what is a safe table size to use for 800x600 resolution, or is it fine the way it is? Also will the table auto justify once I add content to the right side or will it look lopsided. Sorry for the table questions but it's been 4 years since I last had fun putting one on a page. I will take the boarders out once I have a final design but left it visible for design purposes.

this is my test page

You don't need ANY languages to put a dynamic menu on your site, you just need server-side includes.

Also, a little bit of php coding can help you replace an entire LAYOUT with only having to change one file!

760px wide is the magic number

also, body text will likely look a lot better left justified, but thats just nitpicking

Agree on both accounts, however going for about 980px is now acceptable, as XP will attempt to put you on 1024x768 on first boot, and 17in monitors are now the standard minimum with desktops.

While I'm certainly FOR larger resolution and against wasted screen real estate, the decision is largely based on the audience of the site.
I'm sure less than 20% of anandtech users are at 800x600, but sadly 50%+ of users are still at 800x600

50% of my viewers are 1024x768
Only 7.87% are 800x600

I thought about this but right now my skills are limited to inserting content into a larger page rather than having the table and layout inserted into the content page. Maybe in the future but right now I'm trying to learn other things.

Once you settle on a layout lemme know via PM and I'll give you the coding and instructions you need to do it. It's real simple. You just drop in about 5 lines of code to replace the body content of a site, then put the body content for each page in a .txt file and which txt file to load is determined via the URL.

no offense, but there are much simpler, safer, and more efficient ways to do this

explain

edit: As of now I have about 60 html pages that have to be re-coded and colors changed. If I could find a nicer, easier way of doing it other than by hand I am interested in it.

Also, any comments on the new layout?

having a seperate header and footer file, and including them on every page is pretty much standard until you step into the realm of a db controlled content management system...and even then, the header and footer will still be in a seperate files

create a header.php and a footer.php

everything above the content goes in header.php
everything below the content goes in footer.php

your individual pages will look like
<? include('header.php');?>
content content content
<? include('footer.php');?>

when you make design changes, you make them to header and footer - then the changes will be applied to all pages.

So:

<head>
<? include('header.php');?>
<title>Page title</title>
</head>

with the meta tages and such in the header.php?

I haven't used anything footer related so thats something I'm new too.

put everything above the content in header.php

including
<html>
<head><title>title</title></head>
<body>
<!-- start of table structure -->
<table><tr><td>logo and stuff</td></tr>
<tr><td><? include('navigation.php'); ?></td>

I have to leave the table information out as some pages have the tables setup differently. This might change though.

Right now I have a 3x3 table on most pages with the title image in upper middle, content right below that, and the disclaimer at the bottom. The nav menu is in the middle left cell. I made the 3x3 for future expandability. All the table/image/content code is on each page, the menu is in it's on file. I guess this isn't the proper way to do it. I re-did this page so could see the table boarders to know what I'm talking about.
