I'd like to know of any tricks to writing a powerful and strong essay. I have to write an in-class essay tomorrow..I don't know what the subject will be..the teacher will give it to us.

I just wanted to know of any tips or tricks that would help.

Thanks.

You're outta luck, Indians can't write worth of sh:t!

j/k...Just make sure your introduction and conclusion are thought out very well, it also helps to map or outline what you're going to write before you write it. Mostly it's just luck though, if you know something about the subject, you have potential to do relatively well, but if you have no clue then all you can do is BS.

Stay on focus, don't drift off, and try to incoporate personal experience(s) into essay.

Outlines help, as Mule suggested. You should also avoid being wordy. Use active, not passive wording. Stay on topic! Don't put anything in the essay that doesn not directly relate to the topic.

I like "Damn."

Example:
"I cut myself. It hurt."

After transition:
"I cut myself. Damn, it hurt."

Take a bottle of whiskey, go to the bathroom before class and take a few swigs. It'll all flow out like a prolific Burrows or Bukowski.

Every essay or paper I've written, I got lit and just typed away..All my teachers told me I'm a natural writer. haha (Now, I don't condone underage drinking, but for $20, I'll buy you a 12pack.)

Think it out before you start writing. Basic 5 paragraph essay is a good way to think about it. (Intro, support, support, support, conclusion)

Then break the rules.

One important thing is transition between paragraphs and ideas. Even the best argument is senseless if it doesn't flow.

A powerful and strong essay would come from a powerful and strong belief that your opinion on the subject is relevant and importantly in need of being heard. In some respect then, the ease or difficulty you face is dependent on how passionate you are about the subject and how true to that passion you can be. With time and research you might write a dazzling intellectual treatus. Alternately you can simply say what you feel. I find that so many people have been taught not to trust what they feel and so don't have even the faintest idea what they feel or even that they do. I have watched people write an essay on how they feel about the essay and not see that that is what they should be writing. The most important thing is to completely ignore all the advise me and everybody else gives you, all notions of what you should say and how you should say it and write YOUR OWN essay.

I should try PUX's idea. sounds interesting...

now I'm considering if I should try it for a MATH test tomorrow.
maybe try to uncover my "natural" math skills (which means "none&quot

But I can see how writing essays under the influence could make you a more natural writer... but I guess proof reading maybe a little troublesome.

The trick is to not use really huge hard words to try to sound impressive. Chances are, you'll only confuse the reader. Don't make them too simple either. See Spot Run may have been entertaining in first grade, but isn't now

Also, who is your audience. Some techers/professors will have you write as if you were writing to an audience who knew nothing of the subject. That essay will vary greatly from one geared toward an audience educated in the subject matter.

As for flow, take the time to read the essay aloud to yourself so that you can actually hear it. If someting sounds like it doesn't flow, then it probably needs to be changed so that it does.

Good luck on the essay.

You really don't have time to rewrite or reread during an in-class essay. Your best bet would be to organize your thoughts before you put them down on paper and always thinks ahead of what you're going to write so you make make a smooth transaction from paragraph to paragraph, and unless you're writing in pencil, it's not a good idea to scribble all over your paper to make changes.

I disagree. The New York state exams 11th graders have to take want you to use complex words. It makes you sound more intellegent. Here are some 'intellegent' words you should take note of, but be sure you know how to use them. (Yeah I know they are not all real long, but I still consider them a welcome addition to any essay).

choas reigns prosperity initiative indissoluble comtemplate perpetuating achieved attained cease conflagration serenly encumbered virtue emphasize vigilant vengence dominate irresolution enlighten discretion eloquence distinguished comparitively fragrance intellegence grander petrified triumphs failure valiantly enthusiams ambition dispair valor loathsome mortal ignorance elation adversity harmony practical destiny endeavors indispensible ignorance magnificent indulge escence acceptance diligent ire futile aesthetic lack astounding pathetic awe profound stupidity incoherent handicapped grasp pollute uselessness incompetent inability

Thanks guys!

I finished my in-class essay this morning..had around an hour to do it. I did brainstorm and an outline.

The topic was "Will Marriages Survive in the Next Century".

How the hell am I supposed to write about that? I dont think about things like that. I have no passion towards that topic..at least not at this age.

Still...I tried..talked about how marraiges were being exploited in today's society and how other cultures react to that...we'll see how it goes.

Thanks for all the help though.

Mule: cool..kesai ho?
