So I'm looking to get a Fire-wire port on my PC (which currently has none) and I've never used Fire-wire and wouldn't know where to begin.

My main concern is buying something that might be incompatible with my PC

Here is my motherboard

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157293

I have room in the back with a PCI and a PCIE open and also have room in the front for 5.25 and 3.5. I have no preference, just want something that'll work haha

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

EDIT: I should mention I'm specifically looking into 6-pin Fire-wire

Also, here is the product that I'm trying to get working with my PC

http://www.amazon.com/Canopus-77010150100-ADVC110-Converter/dp/B00030ATTO

I want to record game footage from console games and also be able to convert old VHS tapes into DVD.

getting a 6 pin firewire controller card for the PC can be a hard thing as the difference between 4 pin and 6 is power (and ground), but firewire wants something like 48V, something a PC does not have on hand to use/supply.

beyond that, I can not be much more helpful as I do not use firewire.

I may be misunderstanding what you mean but you're saying that you think a PCI/PCIe option would be better? I think my MoBo doesn't even have Firewire header so the front slots might not be an option at all now that I think about it.

Anyway, if that's the case, hopefully someone can recommend a good PCI/PCIe card?

Any of the PCI or PCI-E cards on this page will work. Get whatever's cheapest and has the ports you need. Some cards have only the 9-pin, some only the 6-pin, etc.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...=firewire+card

If you are running Windows 7 you probably won't even need to load a driver for the card. All my motherboards have onboard Firewire and W7 recognized them natively and uses a Microsoft driver from 2006 and they work great.

You might even find a better deal on whatever card you want on EBay. Just beware of shipping charges, etc.

That's the stuff I was looking at, a PCI or PCIe card but will those work with my motherboard? are those slots universal? Sorry if that's a dumb question haha

Yes, the slots are standardized so that any card with the appropriate connector will work.

Yes, it would work. However, I'd get something with a TI Firewire chip instead of VIA. You do pay a little more, but TI chips are the first and last word in terms of Firewire compatibility.

That would be perfect.

I have one of those Canopus boxes. Nice kit.

If you hold down the toggle button on it for about 15 seconds, it enables a Macrovision filter. (For copy protected VHS cassettes.)

Does this box do something that a cheap PCI-E video capture card won't?

In the Amazon reviews at your link, one person specifically mentions using "Siig 3 port PCI firewire card with a Texas Instrument chipset" with the device. They also said it was available on Amazon.

Looks like a Good card for me to get for a Firewire Audio Mixing board!!

(my Asus uses VIA chip)
