My home network stoped working for some reason yesterday and I can't figure out why. Im using Win2k Pro on one computer and Win XP Pro on the other. The Win2k one is set at 192.168.0.1 and the XP one is 192.168.0.2 and they are both on the subnet 255.255.255.0. They are both in the HOME workgroup. There is no firewall installed on either computer. Ive triple checked the settings and they all look correct. Im not sure what to do. Any ideas?

Have you checked your cables, hubs, switches, connections, etc.? From the info you gave, it doesn't look like a software/network configuration problem.

The cables and the hub look like they are connected properly but I have no way to test if the network wire is good. The hubs ports are lighting up when I connect the two computers to it and both compters are saying that there is a network connection. I have been unable to ping either of the computers over the network.

1. check the IP addresses to ensure they are setup properly (cmd prompt, "ipconfig /all")
2. try to ping the loopbacks (127.0.0.1)
3. try to ping your own interface.

What do you mean you're home network stopped working? Does that mean you don't get internet or you can't see either machine from network neighborhood?

Everything was working fine a couple days ago and for some reason its not working now. I can't see the 2k computer from the XP one and can't see the XP computer from the 2k one. The way we found out the network had stopped working was that the XP computer couldn't access the internet through ICS anymore. The only thing that has changed with the 2 computers is the new burner that was installed in the XP machine. The two computers are at my parents house so im thinking they changed something and didn't realize it. I noticed that the XP machine has the network connection labeled as Local Area Connection 5, I thought that was kinda weird.

Thanks for the suggestions miguel, I'll give that a try.

Check to make sure your still using the same protocol in each machine.

In 2k:

Right click My Network Places and select Properties
Right click on Local Area Connection and select Properties

In the properties dialog box you should only see three things:

Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Print Sharing
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

If there's anything else in there uninstall it, and if those three things aren't there then install as necessary.

Click the Sharing tab to make sure ICS is enabled.

I don't know the exact steps for XP but i imagine it's the same, you'll need to make sure that XP is setup the same way... with just those three itmes in the local area connection properties (no need to enable ICS on this box though).

You said in XP it's labeled Local Area Connection 5? If there are multiple local area connections, right click and disable all but one. With the one remaining setup as specified above.

I was trying to find out if there are any other connections on the xp computer because it was labeled Local Area Connection 5, but thats the only one it shows. I tried to delete the Local Area Connection 5 but it wouldn't let me. After I uninstalled the network card then the network connection didn't show up for me to try to delete it. Is there any way to see if there are Local area connections 1-4 on the xp machine?

I'll have to wait a couple days until I get to mess with it again because its at my parents house.
