Need Help With Laptop

I am in college, and I need a laptop that has wifi, a great battery life, and is not too heavy.

Please help...

I was looking at Sony S260-270-360-380

My vote goes for an HP dv1000. I assume this is going to be mobile? the dv1000 is a 14" widescreen notebook, weighs about 6lbs with the 12-cell battery. gets 6-7hrs batt life on the 12-cell and can be had for under $1500 pretty decently loaded; they also have academic discounts too!

Is this going to be your primary PC? If so, you might want something with a bigger screen that is still decently portable.
In regards to the Sony: the S-series are beautiful machines and are very portable. But IMO they're overpriced. For the features you get, I don't think a sexy chassis and 13.3" wide screen is worth the $1800+ ticket price on most of them. The dv1000 is a much better value IMO

IBM T42/43 w/ 14" screen, 12/15" apple powerbook, and that HP dv1000 that fbrdphreak mentioned is a nice machine too. All would be on my list before sony...

keep in mind, anything that comes with the Sony name comes with the Sony price. i think that as a college student you should wait until later for a Sony. unless you're just keen on A/V superiority. i'd suggest an IBM T42/T43 series

Thanks guys for your help.

This will not be my primary computer, its only for class, taking notes, and library usage. Battery and Wifi is very important to me. I would love to get a powerbook, and I can get a great deal too, however, I have been a PC person for abotu 10 years, and I think it would be nearly impossible to switch.

Has anyone switched, and switched successfully?

I suggest the Portable One MX or UX laptops - check out this link that I started. I'm in the same situation as you, looking for a laptop for business usage (just recently graduated from NYU in '04), and I contemplated the T42/T43. But decided to go with the Portable One MX laptop. It's arriving today, so I'll post a better review soon. But read the forums link, and check out all the add'l links of reviews/comments that I've put in it.

I think the MX will be better than the T series in my opinion.... other users of the P1 MX also agree.

Although I'd suggest the DV1000 if you're on a budget, but if you're looking to spend $1500 and up, the UX (3.5 lbs, 12.1 screen, with integrated optical drive), or the MX (4.9 lbs, 14.1 SXGA screen) are the way to go. Build quality quite possibly better than IBM.
