Here's what I get when I run WINIPCFG:
Host Name=Frank
DNS Servers=151.164.23.201
Node Type=Broadcast
Nothing Checked >>
1. First, verify that you're looking at the dial-up adapter (if there's a NIC in the system then you'll have a drop-down list when you run winipcfg for the available adapters)
2. Note the IP address assigned to the dial-up adapter, gateway, the DNS address(es), and WINS addresses (if assigned).
3. From a command prompt, type
PING
address
using the address for the dial-up adapter first, then the gateway, then the DNS addresses.
A reply from the adapter address lets you know it's working properly.
A reply from the gateway lets you know you've connected to the ISP successfully and their network is available.
A reply from the DNS server lets you know that their DNS is active.
If all of these are successful, then you can try pinging a host by name. For example, try pinging
www.yahoo.com
It should resolve to an address like 64.58.76.177
If this works, then you're connected to the Internet and DNS is functional. At this point, if all of these have worked but you still can't use IE then check the connection properties for Internet Explorer (Tools:Internet Options:Connections for v6)
