need help with my new rig

i recently put together my new rig. im running

E8400 chip
ABIT IP35 Pro
2gb G.Skill PC-6400 ram
XFX 8800GT 512mb
Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit

i dont know if i setup something wrong, but everytime i shutdown the computer it restarts itself after about 30 secs.

some weird setting in the bios? something hookedup wrong?

any input would help.

When Vista shuts down, does it say shutting down on the welcome screen?

Have you installed all drivers including Intel INF?

Is sleep mode set to S3/STR (suspend to ram) in bios?

Are the buttons set to shut down in vista?

everything you have mentioned there are correct.

Ok, does shutdown shut down the pc for 30 secs and start it up? If so, you may have set up bios to wake up from certain events.

psu is too weak, or u may be overheating... go into bios immediately and see if u r hot, check the voltages if bios displays them... 12v, 3.3v, 5v...

yes thats exactly what it does. shutsdown then starts backup after about 30 secs. here are the settings i have in the bios

i thought my psu woudld be ok. i have had it for a while, but its a pretty decent one i thought.

i have a antec trupower 440w. im only running 1 dvd burner and 2 hdds.
my other equipment consists of:

my core temp seems to be around 36C

it has been running for about 5 hours.

Whether or not it's the PSU, I would probably replace it anyway.

Antec Truepowers and Smartpowers are prone to failures due to their use of cheap, inferior capacitors. Antec (well, Seasonic I suppose, since they build the units) is using higher quality caps now, so it's not an issue with newer Antecs. Even if you buy the PSU and it turns out not to fix the problem I would consider it a good investment.

Which model are you looking to buy?

Buying a cheap PSU is never a good idea. If you're buying online, people here can give you some good recommendations. If you're going to a brick and mortar store I would see what they have available and then ask on here for advice.

There are a number of problems with buying low-quality PSUs, not the least of which is that it can go out in a blaze of glory and take the rest of your components with it. Unless you find a deal on a good unit, I would strongly suggest upping your budget slightly to consider units in the $50-75 range.

i got me a Antec Earthwatts 650W psu for $55. hope this does the trick. should be here by the end of the week

Probably a good choice. The 650W model is made by a different company (Delta) than the OEM who originally was making Earthwatts (Seasonic.) I hear Delta has a good reputation though, so hopefully the Earthwatts line will continue to be quality budget PSUs.

I don't think Seasonic makes the 650W version at all, so I think they're all the same for that model.

i put everything in. seems to be working perfectly now.

i guess my old antec trupower 440W wasnt good enough. also replaced my stock fan/heatsync with a good one.
