Just picked up an XP2500+ and a NF7-S from newegg.
I have a hard time trying to overclock this board however.
When the system is overclocked and prime 95 is run, it shuts itself off and gives a siren like wail.

Has anyone experienced simillar problem?

Running it with 256MB Buffalo PC3200 CH-5, btw

Is the temp. protection feature set too low in the BIOS? That's the first thing to check, it sounds like you are heating up the CPU and the system is "protecting" itself from damage.

Yes, check that out. Also...you DID remove the plastic "peel off protective thingee" from the bottom of the CPU prior to installing it, correct?

What PS are you using, BTW?

THe temp protection is set to off in the bios.
The temperature never goes over 60C.
I think the plastic thing your talking about is from the OEM heatsink and not the CPU itself, right?
In that case I'm using Alpha 8045 so no plastic thingy for me.
I'm using Enermax 350Watt.

I can get it to 180Mhz but the system shuts down at 186.
Please help...

I have to admit this happened to me the first time or two that I tried to overclock and then it never happened again. i am not entirely certain what I did to make it stop happening. I have the alarms enabled, but I have set the temps high (like 80C or something like that). Note that the temps are on two pages in the BIOS. On the SoftMenu page and on the Temps page. Make sure you are changing it in both places.

Is that AMD 2500 a Mobile 2500? If not you might want to consider a RMA and get a Mobile. The difference in the degree of overclock is worth it IMHO.

What kind of heatsink do you have on the cpu? You mentioned you have an Alpha, is it an old one? The overclock might be stressing the heatsink. Have you tried running Motherboard Monitor or Speedfan or some other such utility that shows you the temps in your system? I just want to make sure that heat is in fact the issue.

Does it overheat even when it is idle? That might be indicative of improper heatsink placement. What are your temps at idle?

Well, I chose the Retail XP2500+ over the mobile because of the 3 year warranty.
On the temps page i have it off and on the softmenu page its set at 90.
Im using an Alpha 8045 and a Vantec stealth fan which I've never had problem with.
Most people have reported reaching 3200+ with oem heatsinks so im confused.
Im using the winbond hardware doctor from abit website.
My temps at idel are 46~48 and does not overheat, but when i turn on prime 95 at anything over 185Mhz, the system shuts itself off.

And when it shuts itself off it sounds like a european police siren, only a little slower, right?

When you are doing yor overclock, are you also raising the voltages to your CPU? Chipset? Memory?

What are you setting in the SoftMenu:
Is CPU Interface enabled or disabled?
What is the multiplier set at? What is the CPU Ratio set at?

That is exactly correct. a police siren.

I didnt raise the voltage becuase it apppears that as I raise it, the system shuts down sooner under prime 95.
Softmenu is set to optimal default except for the FSB which im increasing.
CPU interface is disabled of course.
Multiplier is set to 11.
CPU ratio is auto.
Everything else is default as you can imagine.

I've overclocked with this setup for my friends but never had such trouble.

I have an almost identical set up. My 2500+ is older and unlocked but my motherboard and hsf combo is the same. Here's how I set my system up:

Softmenu selected to 3200+.
CPU interface is enabled.
CPU ratio set to 6/6.
Vdd set to 1.6V.
Vcore set to 1.65V.
Vdimm set to 2.7V.
Vagp set to 1.6V.

My memory is set to Expert with 2-2-2-11 timings.

My system is Prime95 stable for longer than I care to test it. I know that there can be some differences in our system but you SHOULD be able to get it stable at 3200+ with the right BIOS settings.

Sounds exactly like a heat problem. Run MBM5 while doing Prime. Set it up to record log, after P95 crashes go in and look at your temps and volts. Might wanna double check your BIOS settings to make they took (re: cpu & temps).
