Ok here is the deal.

I am going to study abroad in japan for a semester. I will be living in a house with other students. The problem is that my housing assignment put me in a house with no internet. Ihave the option to wak to the house next to it..50 meters away and use theirs whenver I want to...but I would rather not.

My question is..what would I need to do to make a wireless internet connection reach 50 meters in a suburb in Tokyo...

I need my internets!

Japan is awesome. I'm envious of you, young man.

Yea, I'd love to go!

Link here on homemade antennas. You might also want to look up any rules and regs that Japan has on the matter.

OP, do you speak japanese?

No I do not, but I hope to learn some.

I lived in japan as a little kid (2nd-5th grade) and thought it would be really cool to go back as more of an adult..so I said why not and took my chance while I am in college. Was going to go to england but thought that ti woudl be easier to go there later in life, and its not THAT much diffrent then the USA.

Hmm I will try some of these antenas out. I think routers can go 150 feet in an open field...a city..dunno.

I doubt it. I don't think that's legal anywhere.

the house is owned by the school. I get a key to that house to so i can use their common area whenver i want to...I just would prefer not to.

Those antennas will easily do 150+ feet directionally, IF you have reasonable line of sight. If not, you're probably screwed, but you might be able to pump more power into the thing than is legally allowed in the US. I don't know how Japan works.

Can you run ethernet cable? (Lol)

Just found these.

They're not as cheap as building your own, but they'll probably work better, and they're much more convenient.

I don't know the range that you can get off of them, though.

50 meters is nothing for wireless.

Don't forget to get a card that uses japan's spectrum or one that supports 802.11d.

They use a totally different band over there? You learn something new every day...

And remember, it's 50 meters, not 50 feet... I've never had a 150 foot range in an urban area with a regular wireless setup... I think that the OP would, in this case, rather be safe than sorry

It's still 2.4, but slightly different channels, possibly different layer1 encoding. Can't remember.

And with "real" gear (commercial) 150 feet is literally nothing no matter what the surroundings unless it's like 3 feet of concrete just using an omni antenna.

Here's a series of steps that I would take if I were you:

1 - Call/email someone to check to see if there's already wireless available there, even in some ilicit form.
2 - Check to see if the other building has a wireless router. If so, check to see if it has the power to reach the other place (although if it did, they'd probably tell you.) If not, try to get an antenna (and permission to set it up) that will work with their router (although they should be using a 2.4Ghz frequency, you can never be sure, I suppose). If this works, you'll have to buy a new card.
3 - If they don't have a wireless router, bring your own and get an antenna with it. You'll probably want to get the antenna ahead of time, so you can make sure it'll reach as far as you need it to.

I'd go with the third option by default, personally, because it offers you a variety of other options - you get to keep your card, and you get an antenna out of the deal when you're done and return to the states.

On the other hand, if you're going for maximum utility IN Japan, you might want to go with option 2, because then you can always go wardriving (walking?) and have internet all over the place.

Obviously, it's up to you, but you should probably find out if they have a router over there that you can amplify + antennize.
