Need some advice picking out a receiver. Now, my set-up is going to be simple (don't need all the bells and whistles), just something that will sound decent in a moderate sized living room. I'm going to pair the receiver with the Flaunce 5 speaker system AV-HTB. Here comes the I need advice part:

Any advice/experiances/suggestions is much appreciated.

I don't think audiophiles usually listen to this kinda low end stuff so asking their for their recommendations is moot.

Pick the one that has the sound decoding format you like and features you think you'll need. Check www.audioreview.com for reviews, though take it with a grain a salt.

I can't say that I would really know about those two receivers, since I've never listened/auditioned anything in that range...Kenwood does make some decent stuff (Sovereign line?), as does Sherwood (Newcastle)...Do they both suit all the needs that you might have, as for inputs/outputs? If it's possible, find a local place that would let you audition these things, bring htem home, lay em side by side and plug your speakers in and see if that solves your problem.

Seriously: stay away from refurbished equippment.

#2: get a better receiver. There are lots of decent receivers in the $200-$400 range.

You buy cheap. You get cheap.

I agree...in 6-channel mode my reciever puts out 1/3 the power that those do but I'll smack'em aroung like cray.

For you I recommend a $170 Pioneer

if you want to get into some higher end stuff look at onkyo.

I'd do Yamaha, Onkyo or Outlaw. Problem is, I dont think they make a damned thing under 100 bucks, which apparently is his budget.

You are asking equivalent of "should I get an 1 or 1.5 gig celeron?".

Stay away from the Sherwood, its specs suck.

Sherwood was one of the first producers of home audio equipment. They produced very good stuff during the 50's and early 60's. But now they sell stuff like a 100 watt receiver for $79.

You get what you pay for.

You do know the Fluance 5 system doesn't come with a subwoofer right?

And like the others said, at that price it doesn't matter. You could get a cheaper set of speakers (including subwoofer) and still be happy - they won't sound any worse probably...

That Sherwood RD-6108 is actually a pretty nice reciever. What are you using it for home theater? music?

It puts out a clean 100wattsx2 at 6 ohms which isn't bad at that price. It also has nice features such as tone direct which is pretty much unheard of in this price range.

I would get the Sherwood as it also has a 2 year warranty as opposed to anything refurbished. Sherwood actually makes some decent equipment and thier high end Newcastle line rocks.

Kenwood: 100 watts x 5 channels into 8 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at 0.09% THD (Surround channels rated at 0.7% THD)

Sherwood RD-6108 100 Watts RMS per channel (x 2) in stereo mode with no more than 0.7% THD from 40 Hz to 20 Khz, 6 ohms 100 Watts per channel (x 5) in surround mode

The kenwood looks like it has a much better amp than the Sherwood. At 8ohms the sherwood will be < 100Watts per channel and have more distortion at any range than the Kenwood.

Great prices on both... now I'm tempted.

Go with the Kenwood out of those 2.
Either way, your speakers will be the limiting factor.

from what i've read those speakers seem excellent and judging from that i would probably put them above any home theater in a box setups < $1200 i would imagine which is pretty good considering

the speakers cost $200 add a sub $100-200 and a decent receiver $200-350 and you will have an excellent entry level home theater setup for a little over half the price of a HTB setup of comparable quality

anyway all those receivers are probably extremely underpowered and are rated with only 2 channels driven

will all 5 i would image you get 30-40W per channel max at best and probably less

I believe the Kenwood uses the same amps as the VR-6060 and the highly regarded THX-certed VR-6070, although it does not have the overall capabilities of those two units. Search on AVS or HTF, virtually everyone who owns a 6060 or 6070 thinks they are excellent 'bang-for-the-buck' receivers.

Even though the Kenwood is a refurb, I'd easily go for it over the Sherwood.

Go with the Kenwood.... though neither of them will really be that good.
