Alright, my friends and I are thinking about setting up a LAN Party. Information on some things that I'd like info on...

Requirements
Good Network Starter Kit or likewise?
Good games for network? (We have lots, Diablo 2, Red Alert, Descent Multiplayer's, etc...)

Anything else you guys can think of!

Also want a network for my home for two pc's, share apps, files, connection, etc..any suggestions for network kit?

MONEY IS IMPORTANT TO US, WE ARE TEENAGERS, HENCE, POOR.

Edit: I should mention, we will probably have 4-5 people at most usually.

PS. VERY POOR , but not so poor as to have to deal with bad quality crap in equipment, etc...

Buy a 8 or 16 port 10/100 switch (I reccomend the netgear fs108 or their 16 port one). Make sure a broadband internet connection to everyone has a 10/100 NIC in their computer. If you want to share out get a 1 port router (netgear rs311). Then, just run cat5 to all the computers.

Most of the lans I go to, counter stike is the game of choice. Over the net, the other games are pretyy playable, but CS lags even when I can get a ping of 50 or so.

To run a CS server for up to like 16 people, a k62 400 and 128 (256 under win2k) ram is enough.

I am working with some guys to setup a lan at the end of july

anyway we have done this before and usually just use a 8 or 16 port hub/switch that one of my friends brings.

We usually play Quake, Quake 3, and Unreal Tourn.
I am hoping to get some Halflife and Serious Sam going next month as well

the last lan party we had we did some racing games.
we were running a dual celeron 400 server for a full time Nascar 3, and Dirt Track Racing (very fun game).

I doubt we will have that server this year. I think he sold it.

whoa tuna. they said they're poor!

you can jack a 16 10baseT hub off ebay for like 50 i think, or maybe more. buy a 50ft spindle of cat5 and crimp them urself. saves some money. as for nics... go to f/s forum and by realtek based cards. goodluck.

games? really depends on what everyone wants to play.

Place: One of your friend's basements that is very big with not too many lights but enough to walk around

What you'll need: Network switch with lots of ports and an uplink (or a hub will do), lots of CAT5(e) cable, crimper and ends (if you want to make your own cable, the only way to go), lots of food, people, computers, uhm, software. Get your cable from OfficeDepot by the foot, it's dirt cheap. For ends, ANY place that has them cheap. OfficeDepot was selling ends for way too much when I was there, but the cable was priced just right.

What to do: Play games like Unreal Tournament, Counter-Strike, Quake3, or mods of all of the above. There's a lot of LAN party games but those are the most popular. Diablo 2, Age of Empires 2 are also great, as is Civ II. But those are all my personal favorites

You guys should try out Day of Defeat, its a great WWII halflife mod. Last LAN we had we played Day of Defeat nearly all night.

Its very realistic, but not as FUN as CS.

Try holy wars, its the only other mod worth beans.

My friends and i are having another one next weekend if the weather is bad. Our game of choice now is Tribes2 but we arent sure if we can pull off a game with only 8 people and if we do play online, we dont think we'll have good Pings. However, the last time we had a Lan party, we all had alot of fun with Rogue Spear/Urban Ops. This game was great cuz not alot of us could play well and it was a first for most. So as you can guess, we had alot of Laughs when someone tried to throw a grenade and it only went like 2 feet in front of their feet, killing half the team cuz we didnt know what was going on and couldnt get out of the way! I'll put in another vote for Age Of Empires 2 and Star craft. Any game where you can compete and/or work together is a great lan game. Hope this gives ya some new choices!
