Hiya,

after being in constant troubles with my Asus Radeon 9800 pro 256Mb I am looking for a new graphics card, the problem my Asus Radeon had was that it runs very hot. By running so hot it starts heating up my CPU heatsink and temps can increase 10°C on the CPU all because of this Asus Radeon getting 70°C and hotter.

I have a Swiftech MCX-6400V and this CPU sink is very close to the AGP slot, maybe 2cm of room between edge of CPU sink and backplate of the Asus. The major prob with the Asus is that it has a big backplate, the entire back of the card is one copper plate and all this heat while gaming just rises

Now I want some advice on a good NVIDIA based card, it has to be a recent card and it has to beat Asus Radeon 9800 pro hands down. What are some good and recent nvidia based cards that don't get very hot while gaming??? 40°C is something I could live with but certainly no more!!!!!!!!

Thnx velly much,

Laymen

Get an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer, beyotch!

That will run your card cool, silent, and it exhausts the heat from the card out of the case out a card slot, so it cools your case down too.

Can't buy one of those for a Nvidia card...yet.

Have you considered installing a slot fan right below the Asus? The slot fan would push hot air out the back of the case so at least some of of the video card's heat wouldn't reach the CPU.

A do-it-yourself "dustbuster" design, though probably not as good at removing heat as the fx5800 since it's missing the fc5800's plastic ductwork.

I allready have one but it does no good for the Asus, and I don't want ATI anymore since it gives bad performance for my online punkbuster supported games. I really need a good Nvidia alternative Also to answer Dave, well a slot cooler will do no good either cuz its the other side of the card that I want to cool and there's no slots above the AGP slot So you see I need a card that has good cooling on the back or that develops low heat at the back of the card. I read something about DDR3 memory having less problems with heat, anyone can confirm this,

I don't think there are any high end graphics cards that don't run hot. You may want to look into other type of cooling then, maybe even water for GPU core.

Another thought is a desktop case (horizontal deisgn, sideways of the now-normal tower design), Cooler Master makes some nice ones for around $100 without power supply.

But if your heart is set on an nV, the 6800GT (preorder?) is under $350 and is faster than your 9800 pro. Check Hot Deals forum for deals.

I've heard the X800 runs quite a bit cooler than the 9800 cards. - I think the 6800 GT is a great buy... it OC's past the ultra and is a hundred cheaper.

Unless your computer is crashing and rebooting, it's not too hot. High end components make heat. It's about how you deal with that heat, and where you want to put it.

Its not crashing and rebooting but like many users before me online punkbuster games run like crap on the Radeon, I just checked out the 6800 and I really like the GT version of it, only prob is that I cannot see the back of that card to see how it looks compared to this Asus heatmonster I have now.

have mailed the companies selling the 6800GT to send me the operating temps, so should be informed soon I hope, anything must be better than Asus 75°C Radeon pro:LOL:

Why would Punkbuster, a 3rd-party anti-cheat util, run slowly on systems with an ATI card? Does the Punkbuster actually interact with the 3D drivers somehow? I thought that it just scanned process mem and disk directories for "cheat" tools and stuff. That's wierd that it would perform differently with different video cards. Maybe it hooks into the 3D driver itself?

I've heard great things bout the BFG 6800GT OC, which is apparently as fast as the ultra. may run hot tho. has your case got any side fans or an chimney blower?

here's an entire topic devoted to it, but the main thread is filled with users having problems with PB, but so far noone knows exactly what the cause is, some blame ATI, some blame PB, some blame nvidia(chipset), some blame it on the GART driver for nforce chipsets.

All I know is that it all plays smooth on my friends comp who's only diff in setup between me and him is the graphics card. He has a geforce 4 and I have a Radeon 9800 pro.

No amount of drivers for ATi fixed the problems, some went away but laggy performance stayed. When I am playing my Swiftech keeps my CPU cooled down to 48°C full load, when this asus heat monster would be gone it would be even cooler. So the heat is not causing the slowups, what is, I don't know but its gotta go:LOL:

Probably not, most videocards thesedays run pretty warm. (like similar to yours)
