Need Modem/WinFAX Advice

Help! Need info on this issue quickly. My sister-in-law wants to send FAX using her PC. She will be using WinFAX. What modem should I plug in there that will do the job flawlessly? There are only PCI slots and it's running Win98SE. A hot deal on a modem would also be appreciated, but I can take care of that if I know which modem to home in on.

How hard is this going to be to set up and get running reliably? Last time I screwed around with FAX software was NOT fun!

First of all you are right. microsoft made it a very challanging issue, setting up winfax (a.k.a inbox) on the win98xx OS's. To install it anyway, you need to go to windows98 installation cd, and look for a folder called either old, oldwin, oldwin95 etc. basickly its a folder that has stuff that was on win95 and they took it off. Once you found it look for mail, there you should find the winfax installation. That's the easy part, now you need to configure the damn thing, which might be a bit of a pain, but you'll be able to handle it, just use trial and error (thats what I did). As for modem, and fax modem should do (could be v.90 or v.92 it doesn't matter). You might want to try and use WinFax pro. its an independet software, so you'll have to buy it, but installation is much easier. Oh, I just remmemberd, to set up the modem, goto control pannel, there go to modems, and there set the fax/mail modem, to answer the phone etc.

I usually wouldn't bother the General Hardware boys, but I wasn't getting anywhere in Off Topic.

Just got a PM from a peach of a member, telling me to just try an old 14,400 modem, since that's as fast as a FAX can transfer anyway. Pretty smart, eh? I was worried that my previous problems were related to using an off brand modem. Good point about using WinFAX Pro. We'll only have the lesser version for now, so I'd like to improve my chances of getting this going smoothly, as much as possible.

Does anybody else here FAX on a regular basis via PC? Am I in for a mega headache or not?
