If you don't overclock and your CPU temps are good with the stock heatsink then I wouldn't worry about a new heatsink.

You don't need to spend $50 - $60 on a CPU cooler.

I got a XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 and it works great. I didn't even use the optional CPU fan until I decided to overclock it. One thing to be mindful of though is that it is VERY big. If you need to make sure that you have a lot of room from where your CPU is compared to where door is. Mine just barely fits in my Antec 182 case.

If it's too big for you then look at one of the other XIGMATEK ones.

The problem is that my computer has been shutting itself off randomly after about 30 minutes of usage...When running a fan next to the computer, the computer stays on for longer but still sometime shuts off...I'm guessing it's a heat issue...

JDJbuffalo, do you use any cooling things for your gfx card? I have the same one so i dunno if its my cpu overheating or my gfx card...

No. I have a reference 4850 with the standard cooler. I do have 3 case quiet Scythe case fans. None of them are very close to my video card.

You can check the temps for the ATI card by loading up the Catalyst Control Center. Go to to last section (I'm not infront of this computer at the moment so I don't remember what it's called). It will display your fan speed and temp. The temp should be under 85C at idle and under 105C at load (IIRC, it will overheat at 110c). Ideally the numbers should be below these temps because they are on the high side.

Note: If your computer is rebooting without playing games then it is unlikely that your graphics card is the issue.

If you think it's your CPU that is overheating but aren't sure then download CoreTemp:
http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

It's one of the best temperature monitor programs out there. It will usually give you a very accurate reading of your CPU temps.

To give you an idea of what to expect. Your idle temps should be below 50C and your load temps should be below 65C. If it's above 70C then your processor is probably overheating.

To test your CPU and RAM download Prime95:
http://majorgeeks.com/Prime95_d4363.html (This is the x86 one for 32 bit Windows)

Note: This won't test your graphics card. A game is probably best for this although there are graphics card testing programs.

You should run Prime95 for at least 15 minutes to get a good idea of how high your temps can go. If you run it for an hour or two then that gives you the max temps it should get to under normal operations (assuming you don't max out your computer 24/7).

For stability testing you should run this for 12 - 24 hours. When doing this testing it is important to select the "Round off checking" option under advanced. Then run the stress testing by going to Options > Torture Test. Do the "In-place large FFTs" test.

If you are using the stock heatsink with the push-pins, perhaps one of the push-pins came loose from the motherboard, after cleaning the dust out.

Prolimatech Megahalem.

This -- coming from a TRUE user.

I would've dumped the TRUE and bought a Megahalem to replace it.

But the cooling improvement wouldn't be worth the Megahalem's price in "the loooong comet-tail of the Bush Economy." [ . . . sure, there's a "politics" forum, but c'mon. Unless you're delusional, that's what it is, . . . . and it "is what it is."]

If you get your problem fixed and still want a cooler, let me know. I've got an Arctic 7 Freezer Pro sitting in my closet collecting dust. I used it for awhile on my OC'd Q6600, until I decided to go to water.

Load up Core Temp and Prime95 and see what temperatures you get. Also check the BIOS to make sure you didn't set warning / shutdown cpu temperature at 60*C.

It's likely there is poor contact with the CPU fan.

Very cheap cooler:

Cooler Master TX-3

Good budget coolers <$30:

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus
Xigmatek 1283
Cogage MST-140

Performance Cooler <$40:

Scythe Mugen 2

I got the XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 as recommended above...Works greaaaatt! It was fairly difficult to install due to its size but it does the job. Idle around 38 and with games running around 45...Also picked up two Scyth 3000 fans...One of them works perfect but the other is soooooo loud that I can hear it from outside! It clearly has some kind of defect so I am going to RMA it since I bought it through newegg...Never RMA'd anything before, Do i have to pay for the shipping? If so that seems sort of dumb since its not my fault the fan is messed up...
