I've used refurb SCSI and even used ones when I know where they came from and they've worked fine. If it's $60 below the Newegg price, then it might be a deal... As was said above, HDDs are cheap today, so it has to be a super deal not to go for a new one.
I like refurbished products in general. I figure with a refurb an actual human has given it a look over and determined it's good. With a brand new item, a computer and robot have built it, and sent it out. You have no idea if it even works.
I'm talking about real refurbs here. I wouldn't touch an open box, or return with a 10'pole. You have no idea what you're getting into then, and will more likely than not run into problems.
Yeah, I agree - just because it's refirbished does not mean it's going to be accident prone. I've bought refirbished drives before and I've not had problems. Just because a drive has been refirbished doesn't mean it was salvaged from an inflamed computer or pulled from flood waters of hurrican Katrina (although hard drives actually survive floods better than you'd think) and had to be restored from the ashes of it's former life; it just means it wasn't operating up to manufacturer specifications at one point, and it had to be tweaked. I'd buy the drive. Risks sometimes reap the greatest rewards you know!
They're obviously fairly certain the drive is good then, I'd say go for it. Just make sure you keep your receipt etc for return/RMA and of course make sure you backup your data (whether on refurbished drives or not).
A good refurb has had a 100% QC/QA inspection and test. Brand new off the shelf items normally are only lot sampled and tested for QC/QA. I have never had a problem with a factory refurb. From the Best Buy Geek Squad, . . . maybe!
