Hi All, need some opnions......

My specs:

P4 1.6A oc'd to just 2.1 GHz
Using STOCK HS with AS 3
ABIT BG7 Motherboard
Using Hardware Doctor to monitor(came on the CD)

Antec 1030SX case with 3 case fans, (2 front, 1 rear) and Antec 430W TruePower PS.

Case Temp: 24C
Idle Temp: ~42C
Prime 95 Temp: 54.50C

I think that temperature is pretty high for Prime 95.

The thing causing me to be paranoid are....
1. my case temp or system temp reads only 24 C and stays pretty constant EVEN during prime95...

2. I had to RMA my motherboard and ram like 2 weeks ago and as a result, I had to reapply AS 3 to the heatsink and CPU...which makes me paranoid that I am not getting good contact between them after the 2nd application.

3. Plus, when I touch my heatsink, it's not even warm at IDLE. During Prime 95, it's only lukewarm.

Things making less paranoid are....

1. Now I don't think I put too much AS3 on the cpu cuz I did read everybody's warning and instructions on NOT to put too much. I had a pretty thin layer. I used my finger and barely was able to cover the entire cpu.

2. I also have an ABIT BG7, which some people are reporting to giving inflated temperature readings.

3. IT's been less than 3 days since this computer has been up.

4. Hadn't had a chance to tie up my cables, etc, etc.

So should I just wait another week (seeing as it hasn't even been a week since this computer has been up) to see if my temperatures drop a bit?

If the temp's don't drop, then I'll have to take off the HS and the cpu and reapply, but I don't really want to since I don't want to go through all the trouble, again, lol....cleaning, etc, etc.

The_Wildcard,

I too have a BG-7 with a 1.6@2.4 using a 300watt PS.

My temps have been about 42-49C Idle and 53-59C Prime. I've read post of people consistly having temps running Prime that are above 60C even with an Alpha and 80mm heatsink/fan combo.

My conclusion has been that the BG-7 reports high temp numbers since everyone seems to generally be in the same range. So I wouldn't sweat it as long as the machine is stable. Did you RMA a BG-7 for another BG-7? If that's the case and the temps are a lot higher than the first board there may be something to be concerned about.

BTW: Check the BG-7 post in motherboards, a lot of posts regarding temp in the main BG-7 thread. There's also a new bios available, however with mixed reviews

Hmm, I'll check out to see if there's a new bios update.

Haha and yes, I was reading that earlier on the BG-7 thread. I think i read somewhere from a BG-7 owner who said that his temps were close to 15C inflated.....

I have 1.6a @ 2.2 on Asus P4T-e and running Prime 95 my temps are 51-53 and case temp 28 so your temps might not be all that inflated.

Hehe that was me. Case temp reports as 32C right now and processor is at 57.5C according to winbond chip but my digidoc tells a different story. Digi says cpu is at 43C right now (Load) (57- 43 = 15) But I am not 200% sure that the thermal probe is touching the cpu good enough. I think that its good though becuase the temps on the digidco probe flux the same time as the winbond chips' probe does.

In otherwords as the temp goes up so does my digidoc temp and winbond temp by the same amount they just start at different places.

I think your temps are just fine wildcard. If it aint broke dont fix it.

edit: max temp I got underload was around 67C but room temp was 32C

Not bad, I'm getting 23c case ambient, 27c cpu idle.
I still have some fans coming in that should air circulation.

(92mm tornado, another 60mm y.s. tech high speed)

I'd say just keep it under 50c.
