I used to use PM 8. I looked on the Symantec website and it says
PM8 is not supported for Vista 64.

I looked at Partition Commander and it says

Windows® 95, 98, ME, 2000 Pro, XP (32-bit OSes only, Servers and 64-bit versions are not supported)

(Fry's website)

What can you recommend if PM8 etc can't even work on Vista 64 bit?

It has to be as easy and safe to use like PM is I will add.
I assumed by now there would be more supported software for vista 64 bit. I have had this Ultimate software laying around since last year when I got the Microsoft Vista Ultimate 32/64 bit student discount deal for about $70. I then found the trick online on how to install a fresh full version of Vista from the upgrade edition.

Gparted is as safe as any repartitioning software, easy to use also. If I had my choice of any software free, I'd still pick Gparted.

Yeah gparted works great. I've never used it with Vista's filesystem but I'm guessing any late enough version should support it as well as many other file systems like fat, fat32, ntfs, ext3 etc...

You can do it with Partitiion Magic if you boot from the Symantec CD. That way the OS is not involved at all - it makes no diff how many bits it is.

Today, if you must do it from within Windows, I like Acronis Disk Director.

I would probably download it + get the backup CD mailed to me if purchasing online. I am just used to using PM since the days of W98.
Reading all the things necessary to do in order to setup Gparted to work on Windows (booting from CD - not an option with no burner; booting from USB) seems to be too much work.
I am downloading the Gparted Live and Live USB Helper now though. I have an 8 GB flash drive I just bought last night that is holding drivers, etc for the new install I will be doing.

ok well I am confused now on trying to set up the flash drive to be bootable with the Gparted Live zip files on one of my flash drives.

Do I leave the Gparted zip file unzipped on the flash drive, then use the Live USB Helper GUI to OPEN IMAGE FILE (zip - the Gparted zip file?), or just ignore that part and click next (assuming the image file part is for the ISO way of installing...?), then click the single button of MAKE USB FLASH DRIVE BOOTABLE...?

This is the method I use for making USB bootable Linux installs. I haven't done it with Gparted, but it should work exactly the same way...

"Choice 2 (Another GUI program on MS windows):

* Download Unetbootin to help you to create this Live USB flash drive. Just run the program on MS windows, then you can follow the GUI to create the live. You will need the GParted live iso file in this method. PS. The boot menu created by Unetbootin is not exactly the same boot menu as the one created in choice 1. Therefore it's recommended to use the Live USB Helper to create such a GParted live on USB flashd drive. "

Edit:
Just to clarify, you'd want to point Unetbootin to the Live ISO file for Gparted.
