I was gonna do my speech on Soft Money, but I just found out that a great bill already passed to ban it! http://www.commoncause.org/mccainfeingold/

What should I do? Abortion? Capital Punishment? Anti-SCO? Anti-Microsoft? It needs to be a speech to gain immediate action, not just passive agreement. The hardest part, however, is that it's for a general audience of community college students. I know for a fact that I'm the only geek in the classroom.

EDIT:

Repeat:

It needs to be a speech to gain immediate action, not just passive agreement. Government policies, for example, should be accompanied with how the student would go about changing them.

In the case of being the only geek, don't so something relating with Microsoft.

How about piracy?

I'm not entirely against it (as in my personal beliefs on "abandonware", and it's not exactly popular to be for it. I'm screwed there.

How about having a national ID card? You can either persuade for or against it.

Ok, that's what the government should do. Decisions like that, however, are mostly beaurocratic. How is a group of young voters gonna do anything about the software that the government uses?

Persuade people to donate their long hair. Not too many people know you can do that.

Great topic, but I doubt if a group of 20 voters could do much about that. Ideally, I'd like to convince them that they can make a difference.

This doesn't have to be government-related topic, either. Should I convince them to switch to open-source software on their PC's? Remember, they're not geeks. That won't work (yet).

That would be a narrow target audience. I have quite short hair myself, so how would I establish initial credibility?

Tell them you cut it last year and donated it. Who is your target audience then? 20 college, non-computer dorks? I thought there would be more females in the audience.

Great topic. but I have no strong opinion. Nobody is threatening to give me an ID card (other than my SS card and driver's license) for the purpose of controlling me any more than I think is necessary for the administration of the government.

I want to make this speech great, and the only way to make a persuasive speech great is to truly believe in what you're saying. I just need topic ideas. The opinion can flow after that.

Yes, females, but some of them are kinda dikey. Plus, there's no way I can allow myself to convince a hot girl to take away something I love about her.

Immediate action? This is too easy. Give a speech based on the beneficial aspects of self pleasuring. If you can get at least 90% of the audience to join in a group f@p fest you should get an A+.

How about persuading them to listen to mozart/classical music while they study? Bring in a stereo and play some music.

Again, I have to personally believe it. I believe self-pleasuring is wrong, but I can't say it strongly and confidently because I'm quite weak myself.

Plus, I need enough examples, statistics, and testimony to make it a fairly long speech.

Hrmm....

Eureka! You're a genius!

I can convince them to assimilate one of my geekiest aspects: my love for Clasical/Baroque! There's plenty of evidence on the Mozart effect!

Any other great ideas? Good brainstorming never stops at one.

Are you that confused? I said I personally believe it's wrong. Is it hard to comprehend that an individual is capable of holding an opinion that is the opposite of your own and still be within the logical bounds of reality?

If I had your egoidealism, I would be in serious social trouble. I am a total oddity of society.

That's not the first time tonight somebody on a forum confused me with someone else.

In short, no. I have only been known by two names on Anandtech, and one of them made only one post before being banned. I am Kevin The Nerd. I am the owner of the domain kevinthenerd.com. I use "kevinthenerd" on every service I use except AOL Instant Messenger.

If you see "kevinthenerd," it's me. Anything else = not me.

Sorry for going off on you... I just get frustrated that whenever I make an unpopular comment people think I'm someone else. It rarely happens on Anandtech (because the frequent people might know me), but it's common elsewhere.
