Situation: Came back to my apartment and I went to go to the bathroom, roommate must have plugged toilet with something, didn't tell me, and left.

Toilet bowl with a strange looking looking green/blue liquid in it with what seems to be torn up toilet paper. Flushed once and the toilet overflowed, water everywhere. Gave it some time to go down and it went down 2-3 inches. Tried to plunge, but to no avail.

Opened up toilet chamber where the floaty ball is and such, and it's about half full. If i flush again the chamber fills as well as the toilet and overflows more.

Oh dear ATOTers, what do I do? ='(

PS Lifting the flapper was a terrible idea, probably shouldn't have done that.

Well, the water in the tank is used to flush, so if there's a clog it makes sense it would overflow. You'll probably need to snake it.

Also, turn off the water, knob below and behind the tank, until you're relatively sure you've cleared the clog.

edit: Reminds me when I couldn't unclog the toilets for the life of me in a house I was renting. After harassing the landlord to finally call a plumber, guy snaked it and pulled a partial root system from a nearby tree on the property. Needless to say, the landlord was pissed 'cause there was tons of damage done to the line and city code required it to be fixed, pronto. I was happy, that landlord was a dick anyway.

Just keep plunging, and maybe try adding javex. When you plunge make sure you're doing a very tight seal so the pressure is forced directly in and does not just make bubbles around.

Better hope it's not something stupid like cat litter or something though, then it's more serious and it will need to be done by a plumber using special tools.

The toilets always block here, I've become an expert at plunging. Usually 3 strokes and it's good to go!

Plunge like your life depends on it. Push it all the way down, the lift it up really fast, it might break loose whatever is down there. I have had this same problem and that worked for me after about 20 times, but its by no means a promise that it will work. Just keep at it, something is down there and has to be moved, unless something has gone horribly wrong with your plumbing, like a collapsed pipe or a gerbil stuck in there

I've plunged my way through poops that rival the Titanic itself, I was using some good force on this for like 5 minutes and there was nothing. The bathroom smells like urine and disinfectant. There is so much on the floor, oh the humanity ='(

I Don't have a snake unfortunately, how about a wire hanger?

1. Wait until roommate returns.
2. Tell him he's bobbing for turds until the toilet works again.
3. Profit?

I make funny situations possible out of the worst. I'm glad I could entertain because I have a urine concoction brewing all over the bathroom floor and a shitty (no pun intended because there actually is no feces at the scene) plunger.

How the hell does the water flow over? Don't you know that if the water is approaching the rim, you should quickly take the cover off the tank and CLOSE the flapper so more water doesn't go out to the bowl?

(Well, if you didn't before, you know now. )

I've seen toilets overflow, but seems newer ones are better designed for this.

And yeah that toilet situation looks quite crappy.

Chances are that you didn't put your all into the plunging with the water that close to the top. Get some of that water out first. Sometimes you can be more effective putting your all into the pull stroke rather than the push. Give it a try.

Toilet auger $10, everyone should have one.
