Since S@H1 fizzled away, I found myself pretty disenchanted with the whole S@H BIONC deal. Seemed too clunky, and as much as I love searching for ET signals, I was welcome to a breath of fresh DC air.

So I poked around and found a pretty neat little project - Climate Prediction. So after giving it a go - I must say, I absolutely LOVE how the client is setup on this project. It's even easier to use than S@H1's CLI with the multiple add-on programs available(except for things like mass network installs perhaps).

The big plus, is that the "work units" take SO long that you don't need to cache large sets of data and the project isn't as prone to falling on its face with network "blips." So far, after a couple of days I'm only 50% done with 1 of 3 phases of this dataset on a 3Ghz P4. So obviously we're talking alot of time per each dataset. I'm pretty sure it is easy to just "dump" the results if you have an intermittent connection like dial-up, but I think it only gets a small amount of results prepared once or twice a day in my case.

There is also a very cool visualization function, where you can see your modelled Earth change right before your eyes with things like temperature, pressure, cloud cover etc.

The only cons I can see are that the datasets do take a long time to crunch, so you have to change your outlook on results from the instant S@H WU times, and that the client uses about 45-50MB of physical memory while running. Not a huge amount for most computers these days, but it might be pushing the limits on a 4-5 year old machine.

Another good reason to join - the TeAm is only in 30th place overall, with only 25 members - most of whom are inactive.

Just thought I'd give a little plug for this project, even though I'm sure most of you already know about it. I've found I really enjoy it, and after a few upper level Biology courses I've recently taken that touched on climate change I find the science quite fascinating. Besides - I need people I can race!!!

So come on and join the Climate Prediction TeAm!!!

Great info thanks, the TAS team will be moving to all the projects to give them a boost soon...

It sounds like fun

I am not sure when we will be moving to climate prediction , but glad to see we'll have some races going on

CPDN started their BOINC beta-test last week, and is scheduled for release by the end of August. Due to this, anyone not already crunching CPDN is better off waiting a couple of weeks.

Remember, the BOINC-problems in seti isn't client-related, but due to their most powerful hardware still being stuck on "classic". AFAIK CPDN doesn't have this problem, and anyway with so very long wu there will be much less traffic to the database so shouldn't be a problem in any case.

id love to contribute and ive done some research on this project before, but i wont have anything to do with any project run on BOINC and i get the feeling that some others on here feel the same...

Hmm.. I wonder if I should even mention it?

Well, I am involved in CPDN, but I'm not on the TeAm. :Q No, I'm doing CPDN with my boss at work, but don't worry, we're no threat to TA since we're currently sitting in 113th place. We'll lose a spot to "Hungary", but we'll also be passing Team-SciFi tomorrow.

I've been running the project since about late June, and I'll tell ya - if you don't have a decent P4 or an AMD XP, you better plan on a LONG wait for a workunit to finish crunching. Even with a decent box, it still takes about 3 weeks for most of my boxes to complete a unit. P2/P3 processors probably shouldn't even bother unless they're dedicated 24/7. And maybe not even then.

But you're right, the client is pretty solid, and I like having it running as a Service as part of the install choices.

Except for non-connected machines currently being unusable, I've not seen any reason for not using BOINC...

Going specifically for CPDN the BOINC-version has these changes: multi-cpu-support, linux/mac-support, caching (not so important with so long wu), uses only port-80 so better chance can use client in corporate environment, more robust upload-implementation so doesn't need doing manual uploads, less frequent disk-I/O, lower cpu-speed-requirements, seems less crash-prone especially on older machines.

Oh, and if it's the credit you're having problem with, CPDN upgrades the credit for every trickle, this equals 10802 timesteps, and this haven't changed in the BOINC-version...

Then seti upgrades to v4, the multi-project-capability will also benefit CPDN, since some will choose this as a 2nd project and can happily keep crunching even then Berkeley is down.

Ah yes, the multi-CPU support.. I knew there was at least one reason to look forward to the BOINC version. As it is now, I run CPDN on the 1st processor(in my dual boxes) for Team ACG, and Seti@Home on the 2nd processor -- for Team Anandtech.

You know, I saw alot of mention that CPDN was beta testing stuff, but couldn't easily find what was really going on by looking at their website. Are you saying that they are going to switch to a new version in a few weeks that will use the BIONC framework?

I hope the interface does get S@H2 "feeling." I absolutely HATED the interface on BIONC Seti. Probably one of the bigger reasons why I decided to take a step back from Seti.

Hey Def!

I've allready got 2 P4 2.8 on CPN for almost a month now, and I actually planned on adding another pc today!

I've never been to the pcs again since I installed it...

The beta-test isn't currently open, therefore you don't see so much mentioning of it. But you can AFAIK still sign up that you're interested to partizipate.
The beta-test started 5. August, and they're expecting to release at the end of the month. Of course there's still a couple of things to fix, most notably in the screensaver with old names on countries and some problems with the temperature-colours.

The BOINC core client is of course the same across projects, regardless of you using the gui or the cli. No idea how the separate gui they're making will look, but the main points will probably be like the current win-gui. Also, since open-source it's no problem making your own gui if you're so inclined.

The CPDN-screensaver is of course different, most notably having the earth to look on instead. Hitting h will give a partial list of things you can toggle on/off.

From the CPDN-BOINC-forums, Posted: 13 Aug 2004 10:33:50 UTC, Carl Christensen (programmer)
you can put the stats publicly but please don't release the (removed) beta-test website as we're not ready for thousands of users yet! we will launch in two weeks and after that it would be fine of course.

what do i need to do to join Team anandtech?
Ive participated in CP before, but thanks to a unplanned format, i kinda just forgot about it after re-install.
Downloading now again, and hope to help out the team if my puny box can :-\

The BOINC-version is also for mac & linux appart for windows, and will be released 26. August 2004.

The plan is to have 3 scheduling-servers ready for the launch, while wu-distribution most likely will not be a problem since CPDN on average uses 3-6 weeks per wu.

I'm sticking to S@H1 until the end to help to keep BBR behind us ,after that I may well give CP a go (though I already have some commitment to DPAD),it sounds like a good project

Btw S@H1 has not fizzled out....yet
Btw2 I think you'll find that after S@H1 ends that many other projects will pick up some new members as not all will be migrating to S@H2

Good luck with TA CP

Assuming my Tyan S2460 board is still working properly, I'll be bringing a dual MP2000 online this evening. The first processor will be crunching for my CPDN team, while the second will do S@H1 for TA.

If you're not already part of CPDN, I'll recommend waiting a week till the BOINC-version is released, and run 2 instances instead.

Or for that matter a little CPDN, a little seti, a little predictor@home, a little CERN (currently in closed alpha)...

We each of us picks the projects we likes.

I will have to peruse the CPDN forums a bit more though and keep on top of the BOINC development for the sake of my SMP rigs.
