Hey guys.

So with Black Friday coming soon I'm thinking of maybe picking up a cheap $600 rig to replace an older 2009-era computer in the basement. I was just wondering about a few games with regards to "dual core vs quadcore":

1. Fallout 4 - quadcore needed or not?

2. Skyrim - quadcore needed or not?

3. Star Wars Battlefront - quadcore needed or not?

4. World of Warcraft - quadcore needed or not?

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head. The intended user is little brother who also lives here.

Thanks for your comments on this.

You'd probably be ok with a dual core or 860K setup. I'd favor quad core if possible though. WoW is probably still the most cpu bound in your list, favoring raw speed. They changed the graphics engine in WoD though so its not as bad as it was.

Get an i3 as minimum. i3 6100 if you can. If budget allows, i5.

If your current PC lasted 6 years, you may want to be sure its not a complete disaster from the start with the new.

1. Fallout 4: [thread=2454093]i3 is OK[/thread]
2. Skyrim: Pretty sure i3 is OK here too.
3. If an Athlon X4 860K can do Star Wars Battlefront, an i3 should too.
4. I can't imagine WoW not working on an i3, although I don't really know.
Lol if even the Pentium G3258 at 4.6 Ghz can do it without problem!
Even an old Phenom X6 can deal with that!

Go Pentium or i3 6100. You need a good card like 380X or 970.

He doesn't really care about settings. He mostly plays games on "Medium" or "High" from what I've seen. He seems to be more interested in "smoothness" than "OMG! uber ultra graphixs! 4x AA!".

For example he plays BF3 on "Medium" just for the smoother framerate in multiplayer matches.

If you want another 6 years of use I would go with i5. You can get i5's for less than $200, even the low end Skylake i5's are under $200. I'd take a low end i5 over high end i3.
