need recommendation for security cameras/system

i need to get cameras/whole system for a security system. 5 to 8 cameras, needs to cover two buildings. needs good enough resolution/picture to be able to identify anyone who steals stuff.

cost? dont really have a budget limit, because i dont know what to look at/my choices

Here is a link to a webpage that discusses the issues of detection vs recognition vs identity related to security cameras at various distances. I'm not recommending them or their cameras (don't know anything about them), but the website will give you some things to think about. It doesn't mention it, but those issues are also different at night or in low light versus in the day.

Are you going to build and install the system yourself, or are you going to go to a security company?

A really good source of information about security cameras is the IP Cam Talk forums here. They have camera reviews, and reliable sources for high quality cameras from Hikvision and Dahua (two of the better camera OEMs).

i personally have hikvision 6-mp or 8mp poe cameras and a hikvision dvr, it works and looks great, i also pair it with solar flood lights in areas that will light before the person gets to the camera, but this system looks OK

it uses frame to frame comparison for motion detection, i think PIR is better but they all seem to give soooo many false alarms that notifications seem crazy.
