I need your help, guys. My parents are looking to buy a new small to medium sized truck that's pretty reliable, and really, really, cheap, preferably with a 0% APR.

This truck will primarily be used to transport goods for my parents' small business, but I'll also be occasionally driving it to school this year.

Also, besides having A/C and an automatic transmission, there are no other requirements or desirements for this truck in order to keep the cost low.

Does anyone have any idea what truck/trucks we should be looking at (and what prices we should expect)? What about special deals like 0% APR - are any of them going on right now? Anything we need to watch for when buying trucks (we only bought cars before)?

Thanks for your help.

Hate to say it, but for smallish trucks, they are probably the best bang for the buck.

Not this again.

People. Lets face it. If you're not off roading or pulling 6 tons on a 5th wheel, you dont really need the addtional control a stick offers.

I've gone off road practically every day at work for the last month and a half, just getting to the work site. I dont give a *bleep* if someone wants an auto on a car. But, for a real work truck, an auto doesnt cut it, IMO/IME. Where I work, we have two Chevy Chenneye (sic) 3500 duallies with the same engine. Both are flatbeds. The one with the stick has a toolbox loaded on it (its heavier). Other than that, they are identical. The auto has no balls. Its really hard to merge with traffic on the highway when getting on the highway, b/c you are going 50mph only if it was a long, downhill on-ramp. The stick, OTOH, can merge at 70+mph if you wanted to do so.

If all you are looking for is the extra hauling ability, you could just buy a car w/ balls, and get a hitch mounted. Plus, you then have the ability to have more than 2 people in the vehicle.

My point is, if you actually need a truck, you should have a stick in it.

Well, sorry, but I never learned to drive stick and my parents have all but forgotten how. I have been looking into the Tacoma, and mostly found MSRPs in the $14,000 range. Is that right? Also, I was looking at a Dodge Dealer's website, and they advertised a Dakota for $13,000 with a LOT more options than the basic Tacoma after that $3000 Dodge rebate. Is Dodge a reliable deal, or should I stick with the Toyota?

LOL

Get the Toyota or a Nissan Frontier.

The fella wants a super-cheap small pickup and people are recommending Toyotas and Nissans? Yeah right...

What you want is a base model Ranger or S10. Reliable and cheap.

Second the Ranger, cheap and will run for a long time, assuming you maintain your truck.

Toyota trucks sound good, but I still have bad memories of them from the 80's, they really did look like "TOY"s (take a few letters off the gate..), and I wouldn't drive it off road at all. But times change, haven't been a later tacoma yet, so I cant say.

what do you mean you wouldn't take them offroad? early to mid 80's toyota 4x4's with the solid front axle are among the best offroaders ever made if equipped with the right tires and differentials

I'd have to go with the ranger or mazda clone. You can get stripped models for under $10k and I think both Ford and Mazda are still running 0% apr.

Ford is having a deal right now with 0% interest which is what you're looking for. You can't get much more inexpensive than a stripped down Ranger. I've had three Rangers and they all held up nicely for me.

How much bed length will you need, the Toyotas in general are STILL much smaller than the domestics, Tacoma is about a Ranger NOT like a true midsize like say a Dodge Dakota, Tundra is NOT a fullsize either like say a Ford F-350 even though its probably stated so. I would go with the Tundra if you're looking for medium size.

And the Ranger as others have said for compact size, its cheap, Tacoma can be too showy, not much room and expensive.
