Sony WA-40. I think that is the correct Letter number combo. Do a search for sony subwoofer on hometheaterforums.com. I belive the sony is like $150 and is comparable to $500 units. Also, parts express sells a good one for under $100.

I have a Kenwood. I'm not sure of the model number, but it's basically an 8" powered by a 100 watt amp. It can flat kick because the enclosure is fairly large and made of solid wood. Those are main things...make sure you have good power and a solid box. Check for a decent crossover control as well. They will help you fine-tune the sub to match the output of your tuner.

The Sony SA-WM40 opened my eyes. We haven't been impressed by Sony's low end consumer line of products, until now. This sub is an impressive performer, and an astonishing value that can be found for around $150. We have not seen another sub that came close to offering this type of performance for under $200, probably even $500.

From the review found HERE. I also suggest you fill the sub with a little bit of polyfill too, for a better sound.

Velodyne VX10 Powered Subwoofer $200

Dirt Cheap boom

Athena P1 Cherry (Ea) Shielded Bandpass Subwoofer with 75 Watt Amplifier $275

Fantastic little box

Athena ASP300 8-Inch Powered Subwoofer $300

I have the asp400 and it is FANTASTIC

Now keep in mind htere is a SONY sub floating around for $120 that will give you deep bass. Keep in mind that although these might not be as powerful, the bass will be clearer and tight out of the box...the term used to describe this is "musical"

In other words..boom does not necessarily equal 'wow'

By the way my asp400 can keep up with the low-end and the tightness of every song i've tried

For 'acceptable sound' is more like it...without the polyfill it sounds horrible. I admit it sounds ok with the polyfill..i only heard it for a short time....

My Athena ASP400 kicks ass though

The Sony has been discontinued. I'm not sure how good the replacement model is...

I was actually thinking about selling my SA-WM40, but my last buyer backed out...from what I've read, the SA-WM500 (the replacement, no size change) is NOT as comparable. I don't say this to encourage the sale of my sub, as I don't care that much, but just so someone gets the best deal. It supposedly doesn't have the endearing abilities that made the SA-WM40 the perfect budget sub...plus, you stuff it with a little poly-fil and it gets even better.

For under $200, the SA-WM40 might still be your best bet.
